Nola, I am really sorry no one has posted yet here to keep you from getting so stressed. Clearly this is your first foal, so you need all the "don't worry"s that you can get.
NO you did not do anything bad or risky to your foal. Your vet is correct. I know there are those here who do not vaccinate, but for those of us who do, it is recommended practice to vaccinate the mares about a month before they foal. It takes about 2 weeks for the vaccines to work -- to stimulate the build up of antibodies. And you want the highest level you can get to be in the mare's colostrum.
So, don't fret, breathe easy. Just don't start draining milk out your mare to check it so much that you could drain the colostrum. And ask your vet for some ideas why the mare is going so long. Ask him (or her) directly.

Colostrum is activated by the birthing process (hormones), you will not drain it out! It lasts for 48 hours and if the foal does not get the benefits of the colostrum it is because either they did not drink for the first 2 days, there is a problem with the mare not passing it (many reasons) or a problem with the foals immune system picking it up.
IF the mare has colostrum before birth - then that is a hormonal issue, but I have not heard of that much. It is an old belief that many people (even vets) hold on to. As always, vets may remember what they learned in college years and years ago and not stay up with all the lastest research and continue thier education.

Nola, So glad you had the vet out to check her, that was the right thing to do. I give my mares both West Nile and five way in the month or two before they deliver. Its the perfect time to do it as it provides protection for the foal for a considerable amount of time. What was her breeding date and how long was she at the stallion's location?

Nola, you should know that Fantasy's first foal went over. Fantasy had milk squirting down her legs for 3 days on it's own and I was so worried she was loosing all her colostrum. So I called the vet to come out and check her. He told me she is fine and ready to have her baby, I guess he was right because she had it that night. I had to call him back to do a mare and foal check up and everyone was fine, I did the blood test to be sure the filly had got enough colostrum , remember Fantasy had so much milk leaking for three days before. Good news the filly was fine and got enough immunities from mom. If you have your breed dates it could be Flashy took on the last breed date, not the first. All her signs point to anytime now and as long as she seems OK, just hang in there with her. Any doubt don't hesitate to call your vet, if only to ease your mind.

she looks the same, I do understand they can go up to 3 weeks over their due date, thank you all for your support, I was and am going crazy, not as bad now, but still. I am a natural worrier. Right now hubby isn't worried, so i know i need to take a deep breath. let it out slowly, and remember they know what to do they have been doing this since before time was kept. She'll be ok.

no baby yet, but today as I was massaging her I felt the baby move and watched it move, mostly in the flank area, wax on her teets, clear came out of one when I was cleaning in between her teets. was told she could go 13 to 13.5 months. just exercise her everyday, let her set the pace, if she does not want to then to walk her. that just might get something moving. So I did exercise her this morning. she loved being turned out she ran, snorted allot, and just had a hay day. Time will tell.

I have had allot of support here thank you all. went out to see Flashy and she is bigger then she was on Sunday, it was about 7:00 P.M. when I went out, it was 110 degrees today, so I waited till then to turn her out, she rolled once then wanted to come in, so Jim and i took her for about a mile walk, she was walking like her hips were spreading she is waddling,I forgot to take my camera, will take it tomorrow. Her butt on the left side is super gushy, right side gushy, but not like the left. I cleaned her teets one was heavy and hot. still wax on them both, her daughter never got a big bag, just an extra large milk vein. and that is what she is doing. I am doing better now, I know she will have it soon, I hope not tonight, tomorrow is to be hotter then today, but we have a low pressure moving in on Wednesday, and a cool down. 378 days pregnant..

She must be waiting for the cool down to have her foal. We just got ours we went for 95' degrees days hot and sunny, right back down to 60' degree days cloudy and raining, over night. I am super excited as it really does sound like things are coming together for Flashy and it will be soon now.

I know I haven't commented a lot on here but... If Flashy doesn't have that foal soon I'm gonna come down there and give her a big ol' bear hug and squeeze that baby on out! She's driving me nuts... I can only imagine what you're going through Nola! ;D

took pictures of her, she is so big. Now here is a question? She is squirting, and winking, leaking fluid still. Her teats are descended, milk bag on just one side, Is this all normal? I have a picture of them to post as soon as i get them on a disk. she is walking so stiff in the butt, waddles, very content, now allows hubby to catch her, loves to be turned out but just long enough to roll, we walk her about 1 mile, her belly is out on both sides now. she is big...

She looks pregnant in the picture but that's not the udder I would have expected. If she is really close to foaling and has had foals before (right?) then she should be fully bagged up, swollen and pretty hard. It can go up and down, usually going down during the day as she walks around a bit, but still really swollen. Tells us again what her breeding date was and double check your paperwork that you're not a month off in memory. Its easy to do, and could be the reason that she hasn't foaled yet.

she was bredfor the last time on 5-11-07.then on July 13th, 07 the vet confirmed she was pregnant, and said she was far enough along we would not have to worry about sloughing, she was 2 months. From what others can remember about her last foal her bags never got big, just the milk vein got. very large. Clear liquid that is thickish looking comes out of one, milk out of the other. still not rich looking though. I check maybe every few days. they are hard, and heavy, and hot. I am not sure if that is how they are suppose to look or feel but they do.
