You might try straw. She proved one point, if you want to reduce the amount of urine and manure IN your stall put some old bedding in a pile along the path TO the stall. Mine use the horse "urinal" very frequently.

Straw can be slippery when you don't have full use of your legs! I tried it once and decided not to again.

Dianne...good point. Mats are tough on little guys too. We use sand with shavs on top and regular coastal hay fluffed up for the first few days.

ok so we are geting further and further away from our due date and closer to the 12 month mark, geeze maybe we should do a contest on which mare carries the longest Dollie has 8 days until it is a year from the first time she was bred and 18 from the last day, yes she was bred for 10 days, 7 times over 10 days ... She is a bit of a hussy as she was still wanting more after the breeder said no more. (We weren't 100% sure she even took based on her behavior. Even when I took her to the vet to be confirmed twice, because her progesterone levels were too low at the beginning, she was getting rather excited at that sight of the stallions that were there) She is really good at sucking it up.

Tiffany, I love your little smily faces they are too cute. I am hoping she foals in the next two nights maybe three butt that would be pushing it as i would get to see it then have to leave for a few days then come back and play with it, lol. Why does my mare hate me? lol Her last foal came a few days before her due date so i was expecting that when i made my plans, oops!!! Goes to show that they are unpredictable and ornery some times. Oh well, lol. Life is still good because she is gunna have a foal.

So i did the math... Dollies last foal she carried approximately 337 days, this one so far we are at 351 (by the last breeding date, but you can add up to 10 days since she was bred for 10 days). BOOOOOOO, lol

I know this has been a really strange year for TB breeders. It seems like an epidemic of mares that aren't cycling like they should be or pregnancies going way overdue, here in California. Kentucky is also having an increase in dummy foals/ placentitis/ and abortions. So far the vets don't know why. All of our foals have been healthy, but we did have a red bag baby. More likely than not, Dollie will be fine. She just likes the suspense.

oh yeah make me worry about leaving her for one night even more, lol. Ugg We had a "dummy" calf yesterday. Not sure if it took too long to be born or if it got kicked or stepped on. But it just would flop from side to side, poor little thing. I see so much bad and so much good that i cant help be elated and paraniod at the same time. I have a couple of people that are gunna check in on her while i am gone but i probably will have bloody fingers by the time i get back on sunday.
At what point should I start to worry about her being to far past her due date? I know that theey can go 370 easy and that is still considered normal, but with her last being so short should I be concerned?

In my experience every foal is differant and you can't compare..just when you think you have it figured out the mare will throw you for a loop. I had one main brood mare for many years had 6 foals with her. After the first few I thought I had a general Idea how things would go, then she would go and do something out of the ordinary like go early or late ..from birthing wee hours in the morning to the middle of the day. I never witnessed a birth for this reason..she was a sneaky mustang.

Used to be you could set your calendar to Chilli for foaling - always 2 weeks early to the day. Then three years back she went 317 days with a colt. Today is her 2 week date and we are still a couple days out...so, just when you think you know - you don't! I would not worry about things yet.
