A few of you know that I had suspected my yearling filly was accidentally bred last year....late, in November. I was pretty sure she was pregnant and due this coming October. She is now 22 months old. She foaled yesterday. So I got to thinking, what the heck?! Then with the help of a friend, I remembered that while I was out of town late July and had a 16 year old taking care of the horses, the filly had apparently gotten out. I wasn't informed at all that she had gotten out with one of the stallions! So, this little guy is likely 6 weeks early. He is tiny. Maybe 40-45 pounds. He has great suckle and stands on his own and gets up and down well. The vet was out last night and we tubed him with some mares colostrum, gave him some IV fluids and started him on antibiotics due to some real raspiness in his breathing that wasn't present earlier in the day. This little guy is VERY strong, and once we get past the 48 hour mark we should be "out of the woods" so to speak. Mom is being excellent, though we were concerned about her colostrum production, or possible lack of it. She is producing milk, but she doesn't have full bags by any means. Pics as soon as I am able.... keep him in your prayers! His name is Sam. BTW..... I finally got my Red dun foal! Kim

First Congratulations on your new red dun colt SAM ;D I will keep him in my prayers, I am glad to hear he is strong and your filly is taking to being a mom well. Hopefully his good suction powers that be, will kick her milk production into gear.

I think it is likely a Fuego foal, but will do DNA to confirm.

Woo Hoo! Glad to finally hear something on this one! And glad he is strong and doing well. Does Fuego have 3 fillies on the ground? So this would be the first colt? Boy, if I know he can pass on that red gene, I may be back again some day ... Maybe with Conchetta :-). Post pics soon!!!! Lil

Well, the bloodwork came back with a very low immunoglobulin level, so the vet was back out tonight and we gave Sam a plasma transfusion. So that should give him a kick start. He is still very strong, nursing well, and Mom is beginning to produce more milk. His pasterns are beginning to straighten up nicely. Hopefully he will continue to develop into a normal foal! He is getting bigger and stronger, but still very tiny. But, wow....what a personality! Kim

Somehow I missed this thread - Glad to hear that Sam is doing better - looks like he's almost made it thru the 48 hours. Sounds like he's going to be a tough one. Still hoping for the best - looks like you're big surprise turned into a good one - you got your red dun colt. So maybe the "oops" was a good thing. Can't wait to see pics of Sam. Glad mom is doing good as well. Sounds like you've had your hands full !

Hey guys, Thought I would give a quick update on Sam. Sam is doing well.... although he developed a thick, green discharge from his left nostril yesterday, so is back on antibiotics for another 7 days. He still has good energy and is eating well and playing. Thank goodness they are oral and he takes it well syringed into his mouth. I am turning him and his mom out in the 12x24 paddock attatched to thier stall during the day as it has been so nice here this week, and I keep a fan on to keep the air circulating. Some friends were by last weekend and got some good pics but haven't sent any to me yet. He is getting bigger all the time, although when stressed his breathing does become a bit labored still. His front pasterns now look normal. He is still down in the back, but my farrier thinks they too will straighten out, no problem. He is 2 weeks old on the 26th, and is finally about the size of a newborn foal, on the small side. This colt has so much personality he steals the show whenever anyone comes over to see the babies. I have to give Lupine extra attenetion to make up for it! Kim
