Soooo, I may regret this if it gets out of hand, but it has the potential to be very interesting. With the discussion of Kigers and Sulphurs, I have started doing some searching and comparing of pictures between the two breeds. I see some that are very similar and some that look very different from each other. It would be good to keep this discussion to just comparing the outward expression (conformation/ color), to avoid some of the headaches of comparing the other points. Feel free to post pictures/ links to both breeds and even any other breeds that have strong similarities. www.sulphurhorseranch.com/LadyHawk.html The picture of Bunny trotting reminds me of a kiger and that is even with me picturing her as a bay (trying to look at the conformation and movement without getting distracted by color). The picture of her grandsire, Sulphur's Chance, reminds me a lot of kiger Diamond Rio in the full on side shot of him lower on the page. www.circlesranchandoutfitters.com/KigerMustangs/KigerMustangStallions/Stallions.htmlDianne Chaffee's Smoke reminds me of several sulphurs that I saw on random sites. www.equiworld.net/breeds/sulphurspringsmustangs/index.htmI see some similarities here just by their "look", but I also see some things here that I haven't seen in kigers. Dianne has some very nice kigers that are great to look at and compare. community.webshots.com/user/ied0cI don't know what the breed standards look for in Sulphurs, so maybe the ones that I saw that reminded me of kigers were not what they were looking for??? This is just fun to compare.

Here is another site that had some sulphur horse pictures. Again, I don't know whether these are good representatives of the sulphur breed, but as far as a horse goes, they look nice. www.gwtc.net/~iram/ss20073.htmlThere are some more pictures at the top of the page under spanish sulphur.

I really am not seeing the similarity as far as conformation goes. Rio reminds me of a QH. Smoke reminds me of those really nice old style Morgans. I have also seen Kigers that look part Arab and act like an Arab. My friend's Kiger has the typical stubborn as a mule Mustang personality. The Kiger I nearly bought seemed very similar to a QH.
Maybe I see things differently as I have been studying all types of Colonial Spanish horses. I have friends with Spanish Mustangs, Kiger, Sulphur, etc. It also took me quite a while to realize that the Sulphur came in two types and where you find those types on the HMA. The horses furthest south on the HMA don't mix with the horses on Mountain Home. I know this to be true not only to the BLM telling me that they look nothing alike, but also because the horses furthest south come in grey. That is not a color in the Sulphur breed. Not even in the mixed bred looking Sulphurs.
Sbutter, if you would like to talk more about Sulphurs then we should probably take it off the board. Kind of odd discussing Sulphurs on a Kiger board. Unless of course no one cares. I am assuming that the Kiger people would rather not hear a wealth of information and lots of pictures of Sulphurs.

This can be a fun, educational thing, but I don't want to make it only about Kigers and Sulphers - lets' include all Spanish type breeds. Please keep the picts to only 6" wide or 500 pixels and 72 dpi, that way it will be easiest to view. Below are 4 pictures with each of the following breeds represented: Kiger, Lusitano, Andalusian and Sulpher. If you know the horse, please don't "guess" that one...

Ooo, I was hoping for something like this! I haven't had much exposure to other Spanish breeds, but I will give it a go. I have never seen or herd of a red dun Andy (if that is what it is), so I am guessing that the top one is not. The two in the middle could be a Sulphur and a Kiger, although I am having a hard time trying to decide which is which. The dun in the middle looks a little long in the back, but that could easily be the camera angle. I picture the bottom horse as a Lusitano. So, I guess that leaves the top as the Andy. I picture the Lusitano and the Andy as being "bigger".

Top Lusitano, second would be a "Sulphur" (which doesn't fit breed type AT ALL. I wouldn't personally think it was a Sulphur). Third horse is a Kiger. Last is PRE.

The Luso reminds me of this Sulphur stud Chief Wakara: Wakara has a better Iberian hip, but the Luso stud has a nicer shoulder and I like his neck a touch better. Very nice old Luso bred horse there. Doesn't look like a modern Lusitano.

I also think Lusitano Sulpher, Kiger, and Andalusian. Lisa

I think the top one is a Sulpher, the second one an Andalusian (my coming 3 yr. old Andie filly looks like this one), the third is a kiger and the fourth is a Lusitano! Those are my guesses...LOL. Shirley

Funny you should say that the second one was an Andy...that is what my dad had guessed when he glanced over. I have never seen a Lusitano in person, but I picture them to be more of a "bullfighter" type and the way the hair is trimmed on the bottom one reminded me of that.

Hmm, I'll throw my guess in there. The red dun at top, is Sulphur, second one is Lusitano, 3rd is Kiger, and 4th is Andalusian.

The first horse I'm certain is a Luisitano. I recognize the horse. I believe he lives in the Andalusia region of Spain. The second horse I think is a Sulpher. The 3rd horse I think might be a Kiger cross. My guess Kiger X Luisitano. My second guess would be a Kiger but it looks heavier in the chest than most Kigers. The last horse I think is also a Luisitano but it does look more Andalusian in it's head profile, so that would be my second guess.

Don't mind me...I'm just gonna smack you upside the head for that comment... Why? He is a sweet boy, but his owner described him that way to me. I also got to see him fighting with her over some simple stuff. Just being stubborn.

Bandit was the same way, he would constantly try to bully me until one day I just decided that enough was enough and I put my hoof down. I don't think it is stubborness so much as a very intelligent mind that needs to be stimulated. I found with Bandit that he was bored to tears and plain and simply didn't want to do it anymore. I needed to find new and interesting ways to entertain him.
