I received an email today and it says the month for the Kiger adoption is October...would sure be better than November for those of us that travel so far.
I'm sure looking forward to it! We have to have a Kiger Board dinner so we can meet up...

Would love to go adopt another! But, I need info since flying from Maryland. Anyone recommend a good hotel? And not even sure how far from the airport the adoption site is? Any input would be appreciated:)

That's funny someone just posted about this.....I had been trying to talk Cindy (Bravo's Mom) into going! I decided that since the last one was so amazing, I'd love to go again....And after a couple friends egging me to come out again, I think it would be a fabulous surprise trip for my daughter's birthday (which is October)....With her yearling being from South Steens, and my Kiger gelding, I'm hoping that those same lovely locals that are egging me to come out will take us sight seeing on the Steens! And October will be better then November to do this...my daughter will be a Freshmen in HS then and it will be a great time in her life to go on her first "girls" trip with Mom!
My friends in Burns say to fly into Boise, ID...and the car trip from that point is just a couple hours...or you can fly into Bend OR but I was told that the airport there is doing a lot of renovating....may be a bad or good thing! I'm weighing the flying vs. driving.....
I stayed at the Silver Spur last time, and there's also a Days Inn, and maybe just a couple more in town. My friend was telling me one of the motels there (not sure which one) was bought by a new owner and completely remodeled...He said there's always tons of cars outside it so it must be ok...I'll find out which motel that is....Only thing I'd tell you is to stay in Burns if you can...makes it easy to get to the corrals or any dinners all of the fun Kiger people plan! I went to a group dinner last time at Meat Hook with about 40 people and it was a BLAST!
You won't regret going...it's an amazing time....Personally it will be a bit bittersweet as Ron Harding won't be there this time...sigh....

I got him from the internet adoption, but don't want to miss out this time:) My hubby not so keen on the trip, but will come if I want too go yay lol;)

Stlkigers,
There are no commercial flights to Bend, but Redmond is about 15 miles to the North and handles commercial flights. If you have a private plane you can land at Burns also. If we are making trips to the Steens in the fall (meaning no snow to keep us out yet) we would be glad to share what we know about the location of Kigers. After the gather they may be harder to find. If I were them, I would go down into a small canyon we know of out there and hide from humans. Heck, the horses have been hiding from us there for years. Ron will always be with us. He helped us so much with detailed directions to little known places on the range. After Ron helped we never fail to see multiple horses. I like to think of him surrounded by horses now.

Ha! See that's what I get for relying on some one who rarely leaves Burns to give me airport info....do you know which motel Tom was referring to when he told me there was a motel in the middle of town formerly really run down but now pretty redone? If not I'll ask Tom or Andi when I get a chance and let you all know. I appreciate any info on finding some wild horses out on any of HMA's out there....Didn't get a chance to go out there last adoption...When I got out on the Onaqui and Cedar Mountain HMA's in Utah it was just an amazing thing to experience; one I"d like to reexperience AND let my daughter experience! Yeah, Ron being surrounded by horses is an awesome thought......I will always be greatful for Ron looking at all the Kiger colts I had picked out and urging me to get my Cordero...He told me "Don't let those dropped pasterns scare you off; he's a great little colt and those pasterns will come right up with hay that has enough selenium in it"...Of course he knew best...and that gelding is one of the best things that's happened to me in a long time! I know the motel, but can't think of the name right now. It really is amazing isn't it? For as many years as I have been involved with horses, the first time I saw mustangs in the wild I knew what I was seeing was special and as many times as we have gone to the Steens, I will never tire of seeing them. If we can help come adoption time let me know.

Its usually at the BLM Corrals in Hines, just west of Burns. We should get a reservation for the Meat Hook, its the best place to eat. If we find out the name of that hotel we can ask for a discount with as big a group as we have. Yeah! I'm getting excited.
