It's a real possibility, Angela. The bill now moves to the Senate who indicates strong opposition to the budget cuts made by the House. Lots of politically posturing and revisions before any type of agreement or passage will be made. There's a real possibility that the continuing resolution the government is operating under will expire on March 4 without a resolution, resulting in a government shutdown.
It remains to be seen but I think that BLM cuts and edicts to clean up their mess are inevitable. While we may not see as many gathers in the future, it's my hope that resources are managed for the benefit of the horses like discussed in the link you posted. All the more reason I see for developing, managing and marketing bloodlines we now have rather than relying on BLM papers only.

Karen: I have to agree SO much with what you have said above.....and now with the new proposed amendment that dictates NO money be put towards gathers, I sadly think this 2011 Kiger adoption just may not happen... I have just been informed by the BLM that due to budget cuts the government has put a freeze on all wild horse gathers. Gary McFadden has requested special consideration for the Kigers. It will be determined at a meeting on March 4th. If the gather is approved for the Kigers the adoption dates will be November 4 & 5 2011.

Aww man, please let us know Kim...November will be colder but I woul think they would let the kiger adoption take place as they seem to bring in more money..I hope so. This was going to be my first kiger adoption I was attending..!

'Tis March 4...wonder how things are looking?
The motel that Tom was referring to is the Sundowner. $40 night, at least that's what the sign said on our last trip. Most rooms look to be remodeled now.
We stayed at the BW on our last trip. Not sure I'd ever go back. Noisy as all get out each night, plus lost internet connection. Front desk super was not very helpful.
By noisy, I mean the first night there was a fight in the room next door with screaming and either bodies or furniture hitting the wall, and a party with a bunch of screaming girls all night up and down the hall. Not a pleasant stay in the least.
Katie and I stayed at America's Best once...once. We've stayed at the Silver Spur many times...clean but old, and the owner is a bit different.
I may try the Sundowner next trip, or Days Inn, or Comfort Inn.

The federal budget has been extended 2 weeks. March 18th is now the "drop dead" date. This has to be the reason for the moving of the date. March 4th was the original "drop dead"/ shutdown government date. IMHO, the best you can hope for is approval of HMA management through Sept 30th. I see no way they will get a gather and adoption in by those dates. After that is a new budget and anyone's guess.

Haha, Tasha, I haven't been on this forum in a while. Just saw your post! And I'm totally planning on driving, especially if we can steal your trailer for the trip. Already planning the drive time, and waiting on a concrete date to tell my work I'm taking 2 weeks off! I figure we'll take a few days to drive out, maybe sightsee a little since I've never been out west, spend the weekend in Burns, then drive back pretty much straight thru if you help drive.
And Angela, I have some doubts, but I think they will make an exception for this roundup, mainly because it's such a moneymaker for the BLM. From the pictures that everyone keeps posting from out on the range, the herd has grown considerably in the past few years. I would hate to see them overpopulate and get sickly or starve...

My computer broke, and I got a loaner while mine is being fixed, so none of my favorites are on it. Hopefully I'll get my computer back this week sometime....
But I hope they don't put off the gather... I've waited a long time to get to see this in person!
