Michelle came up with a great idea. Kiger Owners/Breeders Association. It needs to be a support for the horses and the owners in every, way, shape and form, NOT another registry. I am going to put my thinking cap on for this one. Let's here your ideas!!

I would love to have a website for it that is user friendly. It should be a place where people interested in the breed can get in contact with the breeders. This message board helps keep communication open to everyone, but it is hard to specifically look up who has what horses and what those horses have done. So this should be a key way for communication, but it would be nice to have some kind of database. I know websites (especially ones that are professional and hold a lot of info) cost time and money, so there would have to be some kind of membership payment. I guess this all depends on how big we want to start this thing and how much interest there is. Are there any long term goals or "dreams" we would want to aim for? Think big and then break it down into smaller steps. Maybe we want it to be very simple to begin with and go from there. What would be a priority or top ten to do list?

For an association to really move forward I think it must be treated as a business. Lots of research into what has worked for other associations needs to be done. A planning committee of individuals from all interests needs to be set. An outline needs to be drafted, etc. IMHO, this really can't be done through a public message board. Putting info out on the web before a committment and plan is in place will fail. Not trying to be negative but the idea of an Association is great but the work involved will be intense. Many of the people needed to pull this off are not going to be found on message boards but it's a place to start.
Just my thought, now off to work.

I do also believe it will take a lot of planning, but I also think there is someone out there who could do a web page for very little money. PWHC has a web page made by Gwen and we pay her $100 ayear! www.pacificwildhorseclub.org/If we can get are planning done I think the Kiger adoption would be a perfect place for us to get together and finalize things!

I agree with you Karen, I want this to be something more than what this message board has to offer as far as info and communication. This breeder's/owner's organization should be done on another site and not through this message board, but we can definitely ask for any input or thoughts from the public to get it started. This organization should fit the needs that this message board can't give and help promote kigers in all of their forms and registries. We do need a plan of action and know what kind of interest there is in this idea. I know there are a lot of people out there that are not involved with registries or this message board, so it will probably have to be word of mouth too.

I'll be glad to help. The structure will be important as horse people seem to love to fight.

Horse people in general have strong opinions and ideas. I think structure is definately needed, a ten commandments have you or list of goals. No matter how much we love our horses and one another, there has to be rules and regulations. Then adding incentives for owners and breeders to be a part of the assoc. They can be basic generic guidelines that you can draw from any assoc. to start really. I don't believe to has to be that hard to get things initially established. The hard part is keeping it going.

Hi- just wanted to bring this topic back to the top as I think we really need to consider an owners/breeders assoication. It's time to reunite this breed and work together to promote Kigers.
I would also like to suggest we add a section to this board that is for Kiger Promotion - remember, any time you are taking your Kiger somewhere, no matter how big or small, it is helping to promote the breed. I run across people out on the trails who want to know about my horses. They get a lot of attention anywhere they go :-) It would be great to direct folks to a place where they can see what Kigers are all about without having to wade through registry stuff.

That's a great idea. For the people who are interested int the breed we could direct them to here and the performance page.

Actually, I think the Kiger Owners/Breeders had their first meeting in Burns this month:-) Really?? Even though I was there guess I missed it. It was extremely nice to actually meet people I have "known" through the internet for years. Meeting is the first step; did that with most on this board except Sarah & Amanda, sorry never did meet up with you. Still think an association done right is a great idea. Did anything come of the meeting?

It wasn't a meeting Karen, they are jokingly referring to all the people who came to dinner. It was great to meet you as well! It was only 12 hours down and 10 hours back of driving for me and I can't imagine the drives some of you had.
I would LOVE a website that had a place where people could submit their horses with dams and sires and any accomplishments. DNA results could be shared between people if they wanted too! What a gift that would be.
