So, who has foals due next spring??? We bred five mares - Sage to Charro, but she was sold; Morgan back to Charro, Nesa back to Charro, Leza to Charro and Sycha to Charro.
Morgan ultrasounded in foal last week and Nesa we can't check, but she appears to be bred and has not shown another heat. Leza ultrasounded NOT in foal and Sycha is in the process of reabosorbing hers. We have had issues with Sycha in the past, this will be her third she has reabsorbed. No good reasons for it that the vets can come up with, except maybe the progesterone is low when it is time to attach to the uterine wall. We just think she only keeps the best ones....
So, hopefully, only two foals next year. Small number but when I look around at all the horses that need to be ridden and started over the next two years, that's okay!!

Well, when the vet was out months ago, we ultrasounded Morgan - who confirmed in foal; Sycha - saw the foal, but vet said she was reabsorbing it; Leza - vet said not in foal, but I saw he had trouble finding one of the horns and he said she was "tight" and done coming into heat for the year. We were not able to ultrasound Nesa... However, if you look at the picts below, Leza sure appears to be pregnant! She is getting bigger every month. Sycha does too. Nesa does not look bred, but being only her second foal, she may be carrying high like Sage did for the first few years. So hoping to get our Charro/Leza foal in spring!!!

Well, I wasn't planning on having any babies.... but it's totally my fault. Tesoro got loose twice last year, once when a tree took out part of the fence in a big storm, and once when I didn't lock his gate back correctly. I was pretty sure I got to him before anything happened, but it doesn't look that way! This is Kira, my TB mare, on this past Monday And here's T-man out in his pasture (which is now across the street from the girls), all muddy and wet in the rain we've been getting. I lay my head on her belly and talk to the baby, and I can feel it moving and kicking, lol. The earliest kind of imprinting! I'm kind of excited and kind of sad at the same time. I really wanted a foal out of these two, because they are a great match, and both have amazing personalities. But I wasn't planning on it few years, when I could afford to keep it. Plus I wanted Tesoro to get some in depth training and show experience before he was bred. I have a good friend who I'll be giving the foal to, with the agreement that if it doesn't work out, I get the baby back. So, now that it's definate, I'm crossing fingers for a dun filly!

I'm afraid she's due at the end of February. Not a good time for a foal! I'm moving Kira to my friend's barn in the next couple of weeks. She has a barn right next to her house where I can put heat lamps, and that also means she'll be there at night to blanket the baby if needed. I'm so worried about the poor little thing being born in the middle of the night and freezing to death!

Quil was born on March 3rd and she was born with tons of hair. Mother nature just knew I guess. You can see pictures at pets.webshots.com/photo/2682134140011474284LcsHIl I put a turnout blanket on her and left it on. Pretty sure it was a Tough 1 which is a great blanket because it is waterproof and has a surcingle and leg straps so it stayed on. It was medium weight which was fine for here with low 40s for the high and upper 20's to low 30's at night. It kept her nice and dry.

Stormy is due as you all know in February of 2010,she is getting bigger, I have seen the foal move, and she was producing allot of saliva, she ate some dried weeds, and some cut Bermuda grass, and has not done that again...have any of you experienced this before...

They can do that if they choke, get something that doesn't go down easily when swallowed. Or I had a filly get stung in the mouth by a bee and she did the same thing. Sounds like it resolved itself though.

Yea, it's usually in the low 20's overnight during the winter, but sometimes we have a string of a few weeks when the lows are in the teens or single digits, and the highs are in the 20's. I just hope it isn't that cold when the little one comes around!

Congrats on the babies.....Amanda; I feel sorry for Kira; she's so big already.....I can't wait to see the baby though! At least if you can't keep the foal, you'll still be a big part of his/her life...

Well, its only 4 short months and I will have my very first Kiger ever!!!! I am so excited. I dont really care what color it is or what gender, I am just hoping for a healthy and happy baby. It will be interesting to see what Doc Holiday (Red Dun) and Shasta Honey (Dun) produce.
