Well, being that I am having conversations at the moment with Dr. Sponenberg on color, I will send this link to him to see what he thinks.

"I suspect he is a seal brown with the cream gene. They likely had him DNA tested, and the results would have likely come back ‘one dose of cream’ and ‘nonblack,’ leading to the conclusion of buckskin. I have seen one or two VERY sooty buckskins that almost come out this color , but they usually have more dappling where the black meets the gold color. D. The key word here is SUSPECT. That means he is speculating, and not giving a difinitive answer, which is what he mostly does. I SUSPECT he would not give a difinitive answer without seeing the DNA results and seeing the horse in person.

Yes, but it is much better than our speculating when it isn't in our expertise. I would rather trust his speculating given that his is field of expertise than anyone else's guessing (including my own).

He sure is a pretty boy! I SUSPECT that if I care weather he was a buckskin or not I would contact the owners to see what his DNA results said, before I would SUSPECT that he is not.

Wow... You do realize that I did see that he said "SUSPECT". His comments are far more valuable about what he SUSPECTS that any opinion on this board regarding color.

Kim, please tone it down. I don't know if you realize that you come across as all-knowing and condescending in the remarks and posts you make....it seems to bring out the worst in folks. Even your questions seemingly come across as having hidden agendas and sarcastic twists to them.
The horse obviously still has the creme and sooty at work - no matter what base color he is. We all appreciate when people post stuff like this, because it is interesting. There are ways to get your opinion across without putting everyone on the defensive.

Oh! I didn't realize that Michelle. I was actually very confused why people were posting such mean comments after I posted a quote from Dr. Sponenberg. I was guessing that my amateur guess on this horse's color and then posting Dr. Sponenberg's expert guess that basically backed up my own is what got people upset. You would really have to meet me in person to realize I am not a fire breathing dragon, but a very passionate and sweet person. I do love lots of jokes though.

Ahhh, that's my horse you're talking about! To clear this up, AQHA's definition of his color is smutty buckskin. When we bought him as an 18mo old, I questioned his color and asked AQHA about it. In the pictures of him in his ad, he is still wet from bathing him. In the head shot you can see water dripping from his mane. He is lighter in person. Just wanted to give an answer! Thanks for your time. Kathy

You wouldn't know, but we have grullos that are really dark like your gorgeous boy. That was the reason I was so interested in his color. There seems to be a form of sooty or smutty that covers the entire body and darkens the coat except for small areas on the face, flank and under the tail. My own stallion, Chinook is that way. You can see a dorsal, sometimes if he's been in the sun enough to fade him out.
