I put Cleo' in the foaling stall for the first time tonight. As her udder is full and tight for the first time and her bum hollowed out and relaxed. Sense she is a maiden mare, it is anyones guess when she will foal. So she got a bath and I braided her tail. She is low mare in the herd and I do not want her having the foal out in the herd. I did not get pictures today, my daughter has the camera at work showing off mule pics. But here are pics of Cleo' I took May 6th and she barely had an udder to speak of.

She looks great and "YEAH" she is getting ready! You can tell she is close with her topline getting more prominant and some ribs begining to show as the foal drops. Are her flanks hollow up top or getting filled in?

Her flanks are filling in, but I wanted to ask you a question a Michelle sense you have seen more maiden mares then I, Cleo' only being my second. Sense I am on mare duty with Cleo' I am keeping a close eye on her and paying closer attention to her privates. Not so much her udder, which can be unreliable in maidens. Do maidens elongate and relax when they are getting close to foaling as much as the old broodmares? As of right now Cleo' has yet to show signs of that.

Yes, usually they do, but it can be much less than a matron mare...and sometimes for quite awhile before hand. Some will shape up and then hold off because they don't know what is going on - they put off foaling from nerves.

Thank You...for that info' Michelle. I have been bringing her in at night to the foaling stall, also feeding her breakfast in the stall rather then putting her out in the pasture to eat with herd as she is low horse in the herd to avoid her going thru' any stress. She is turned out during the day.

still no baby...but we made the foaling stall larger she is a bigger horse then Fantasy, We wanted her to feel like she had plenty of room to lay down and foal. My camera is not working (it is just old and cheap) so it is back to the old days. Get up and open the sliding door and shine a light towards the barn every few hours to check on her. I plan on getting new pics today, as well.

Cleo' is a daughter of Steens Vaquero and a Overo Paint mare. Speaking of which her dam just had her first mule yesterday, a dark dun john. She is getting closer and my daughter filled her stall with fresh straw yesterday. We have finally noticed relaxed and lengthing of the vulva and alot more sinking in the top of her bum. She is scratching her bum alot as well. Today she will get another herbal bath (it is supposed to be in the 80's today) she developed a hot spot from constent rubbing. She spends a couple hours out on the grass pasture with Fantasy and Super, it is quite and cool up there. She has an opportutnity to just graze and relax and roam around for exercise.
