Some picts we took of Charro today out playing. He is feeling the best he has in years - not to mention looking great due to the new diet he is on...Charro will come out of retirement this year to do breed demos at horse fairs around Texas!

His personality is as wonderful as his photos. He really is handsome and a sweet guy. I remember the first time I met him many years ago. I met him when I went looking for a stud to breed my mare to and I chose Geronimo, back when his home was at the Kiger Mustang Ranch. I got to meet him one on one when I went to pick up my mare and Rick could not catch her, he just left her in the paddock with Geronimo and told me to go catch her. I was always told studs were scary and dangerous but Rick said not to worry and Geronimo walked right up to me he would have easily followed me home, he couldn't figure out why I was not there to catch him. I had to give him love and attention for coming to me but I was there to catch my mare. Geronimo was then generally just a nice guy that loved attention, I would imagine he has remained the same. Here is a photo I took of him all those years ago...

Great shots Michelle. Boy he is looking GOOD! Gosh, I see so much of him in Calista. I'm sure please with what he produced in her. The rear is a trick you've taught him then Michelle?

The shots are from my digital camera....yes, the rearing is a trick I taught him for demos, as you can see it is his favorite thing to do to show off. He also knows Spanish Walk, but he plays like he doesn't so he can rear some more! He will also sidepass to you at liberty, plus back up to you at liberty....'course that has something to do with the fact he wants his butt scratched! We also do a "stupid pet trick", where he is loose (right after all the rearing and such) and I hold his front legs and walk underneath him.
Thanks for sharing that pict Tiffany! Yes, Charro is still a love. It is quite the opposite of his other side which is very intense. He is always a gentlemen with the ladies and usually I hold the mare and he is loose. He is great about being able to back him off or make him wait. Sometimes the mare needs a little convincing and he can be quite suave about the whole thing! If I turn her shoulder to him he comes over and nibbles and kisses until she is ready to go! I have even had outside mares that want nothing to do with it, then afterwards want to follow him around like a puppy dog...but at that point he wants attention from people!
I belive he is 13 or 14 this year, would have to look it up. He has some of the sweetest fillies and I think they are great producers. I have one daughter of Charro that is breeding (Sycha), and in her foals you can still see so much of thier granddaddy, plus the temperment is passed through. She is my best producer so far. I am excited to see what his younger daughters will put on the ground in a few years. It is great to see Diannes' Calista produce such a nice filly with Chinney! It will be fun to see her grow up.....I will have to keep telling myslef "I DON"T need another horse!".
I have only had 3 purebred colts by Charro (all out of Madonna), and while they are very nice in thier own right, I have not been able to duplicate his intensity and extreme athletic ability. I am sure some of it has to do with his being a stallion, but Desi is a big teddy bear and so is Rico. Rev is pretty intense and super sensitive, but being a gelding he lacks that extra drive. I do see Desi getting more focused as spring comes upon us, so maybe some of that will change - but there is no way with his size and having had EPM he could ever get close to Char.
I will start breeding Charro to Leza this spring until we get a stud colt that will be worthy of following in Charros' foot steps - as close as we can get!

But Michelle, you DO need another horse! Talk about concentrating those genes and getting a great junior stallion....

Michelle have you thought about freezing his sperm. I am serious and want to breed Stormy to him, either by live cover or frozen semen. He is magnificent.

Yes, I have thought of freezing his sperm. Last year we collected him for the first time and it was like he was doing it forever - did not miss a beat! Thanks for all the nice comments on Charro.

That would be super, he should be available as lots of people would like his foals. I sure like Calista. She is a higher energy Kiger than my others, but thats good I think. Her foals are easy to work with and very athletic. Is he wild born or captive bred? If wild, which HMA?

He is a beauty. Why did you retire him?

Charro was wild concieved and the mare, Marvilloso, came out of the KHMA.
I retired him for a few reasons. Mainly because I have so many other things going on with the businesses plus my horses to ride/train plus the young horses each year that are sold to get under saddle...my time is just limited. Charro pays for himself, so I just don't worry about him too much having another job!
