OK, so we have good vets here with great diagnostic tests - most of the time. On June 19th I had Calista blood tested to see if she was pregnant because I hadn't seen her come in heat. She had aborted last spring and I knew it sometimes took months to cycle again. Nope, definitely not pregnant. Two days later the grandma at the pasture said she saw Chinny mounting Calista. OK, great she's bred. But boy was she fat! Then I got worried that she was pregnant with twins, she was so getting so big and not due until May! She was a little colicky and we had the vet out in January. No real colic just a huge uterus sitting wrong. She felt legs and shouldn't have been able to so likely there was a small foal and a larger one down lower. Legs were too small for a near term foal. OK, worry continues. Calista was much bigger than I'd ever seen her and my hope was that the twins would abort and she would be OK. No way could she make it to May.
Then this morning she presented us with the biggest filly we've ever had, obviously full-term, true black with a star and tiny snip! All the worry evaporated and was I thrilled! I spent the day with them and got the filly to love butt scratches and accept being held this afternoon. She apparently couldn't figure out how to get down to the ground to nap from her lofty height as she stood all day long, knees locked to nap. She finally figured it out before dark. I had a baby blanket saved for "just in case" and we put it on her as the nights are still freezing. Now all I need are the Spanish words like Horrah! Wahoo! and Surprise! to figure out a name for her. Pictures in a day or so.

OMG! How wonderful! And a black like Chinney! Wahoo! Cannot wait to see her. Surprise in Spanish is Supresa. I know because I considered it when Chica was born, as she was my suprise bonus filly. Huge congratulations! Linda D

Yes, the test said definitely not pregnant on June 19th. I took the placenta in to be checked and the vet said "Wow, guess that test isn't all always reliable". Could be the lab messed up. It measures hormones. I'll work on getting pictures today with her little blanket on. She is black black all over. Not grulla looking like other foals. I know that Calista and Chinny only have one dun gene each so am betting its true black. Its so cute that the foals born early have sooo much hair and the ones born in summer have a short coat. Mother nature knows what she's doing. Chickadee looked a lot like Calista but this girl is going to look like her dad and be really, really big.

Congrats Dianne! We named our surprise colt Sigilo which means stealth, shyness, secrecy as he evaded the ultrasound we took to see if he was there. Can't wait to see pictures! I bet she's lovely! ;D

Congrats, Dianne.
Can't wait to see pictures, foals are so cute and heartwarming!
Since you know that Chinny is heterozygous dun, why don't you send some DNA in for the test, to see how accurate that "marker" test is. Let us know the results. I have heard differing opinions of how reliable these "marker" tests are vs. when they have actually found the gene.
If it were me, I 'd probably name the filly after one of the B-52s, since the B-52 is a stealth bomber, isn't it? ;-o And she sure was one stealthy foal with a big impact when she landed!

Thanks for the ideas everyone, the B-52 idea is a hoot Diane, thanks. Have you tried the test? I've only heard from one person on the dun genes site that had been tested. OK pictures, on my list for tomorrow. Day three is when the fluff out and you can really see what they look like.

Congrats Dianne. My vet has always told me that blood tests for pregnancy are quite unreliable, and that the blood must be drawn during a certain point during the pregnancy to even be considered. Ultrasound is definitely the way to go.
