No baby yet! Mari and Morgan are both driving me nuts with the wait. I always thought that Mari would go first, but now Morgan is really bagging up and is so huge. So, I may have a little QH baby before I have a Kiger baby. Either way, just as long as they are both healthy. You better believe I will put up pics as soon as it happens.

Well, now it looks like Morgan and Mari are in a race to see who will foal first. I've been at the barn the last two night watching Morgan (both nights I thought for sure she would foal, but no). Last night, as we were watching Morgan, Mari started rubbing her tail and appeared to be having contractions. So, it looks like it will be soon. I just hope these two girls don't drag things out too long!

is this true or is this an old wives tale: a horse will stop it's labor if it feels threatened, and if we are always watching they will hold off for as long as need be.

Once labor has really begun i.e. water has broken, that's not possible. However, the start of labor can be delayed if there is too much going on, but not forever. So sometimes a wild mare will hold off giving birth in the corrals until she is at her new home and feels safer. Or there are frequent stories of people who stayed up every night for two weeks waiting for a birth. When they go in for a cup of hot chocolate and are gone for 1/2 and hour one night they come back and there is the foal. I think that perceptive people can tell that's about to happen but mares can be pretty cagey.

We have been spoiled because almost all of our mares we can test the milk daily and then we know when they are gettin ready! We also keep detailed records and mostly we are no more than 3 nights waiting. We have cameras set up in both pens and a monitor in the feed room. We like to watch even a few days up to the birth so we learn thier patterns. It is very interesting to see how each mare shapes up. Momma is the only mare that has been "text book" so far. All the others have thier own way about things. Obviously we can't test Mari and Morgan is not too keen on the idea, but we will work on her for next year.
We like to have the mares out every day up until they foal so the baby can run into the correct position for birthing. I have seen lots of folks lock up thier mares for up to two weeks before they foal, and those barns tend to have more issues. We got a few inches rain overnight (YEAH!), so Morgan did stay in today. She did alot of nesting, pawing and moving stuff around in her pen (the pens are 30x30 so she has lots of room). Alot of backing up to try to relieve pressure too. Can't wait for our first foal this year!!

cool, I am so nervous myself, this is Flashy's 4 foal, but my first, so reading all of these postings help me allot. I turn Flashy out everyday and let her (make her) run. I help her,and she and stormy help me loose weight. it is a give give situation...

Well, no babies yet. Mari and Morgan still seem to be progressing. Mari was much more active in the beginning of the night, but then layed down and seemed to rest. We will see. I am so tired and haven't been keeping up with the board. I am just getting home from another foal watch! Hopefully this weekend Morgan will foal. I think it might still be a while for Mari, but who knows.
