Nesa is our mare from the last adoption...she has had two fillies with Charro; Luna (dun) and Kahlua (not sure!). Nesa may carry the brown gene due to the color of Kahlua but for all general purposes, we'll call her dun.
Nesa went 333 days with her first foal, Luna and 325 with Kahlua. Today she is 308 days in foal; this will be a full sibling to above fillies.
Picts to come...
Color possibilities:
65.63% Zebra Dun 21.88% Grullo 12.5% Red Dun

I wonder if Nesa is a carrier of the seal brown gene? Are you going to color test Kalhua? That would be really cool to see the results! It would be awesome to see if she threw a colt this time since her and Charro's fillies are so nice looking.

There were a lot of browns at the last adoption, funny as I don't remember there being any the previous two adoptions. Must have been a couple of brown stallions out there. So brown, as used here, is a gene not just a color and is similar to the agouti gene that makes bay. But it doesn't lighten the coat like the regular bay (agouti) gene. It was discovered in France a few years ago and there is a test for it now. Before the test it was noticed that horses would test positive for the agouti gene but could be almost black - seal brown, with a yellowish tone to their nose and flank. I tested Chinook early on for color and he was not positive for the agouti gene. So you can get a similar color in sooty horses that fade in the sun, but no yellowish tone to the nose - or maybe there is another gene out there.

Ron ( rest his soul.... ) told me to keep a close eye on those "brown" horses, as he thought that some of them were brindle.

Nesa doesn't look like a brown dun, what do you think Michelle? I'm pretty sure they've decided that brindle is a result of two eggs (?) combining into one horse. A chimera I think its called. Their foals are not brindle, although boxer dogs can be brindled often so maybe that's not true. Cattle can be brindled as well.

No, Nesa does not appear to be a brown dun; though her daughter, Kahlua certainly can be brown. I think she fits the seal brown color description. I know when the agouti is on black, it makes bay (or dun in this case) and can't hide. Can the brown hide if Nesa is double agouti and one is brown...? Interestingly, Nesas' first filly, Luna, has very interesting stripes on her back - not really fishbown, but broken long ways. I'll get a pict up of it.
Braford cows are many times brindle (Brahma and hereford crosses). We even have a braford/angus cross that is bridle - I'll have to get a pict of her, she is really dark and neat looking.

My daughter's Cleo has vertical stripes, now that she is shedding you can really see them. I was told there are other Cowboy foals with vertical stripes.

Here's Lunas' dorsal at about a month old. I guess there are some stripes that come down a little.

It would be interesting to test Nesa. Your idea that she has one complete and one brown would work! Can't see the pictures here at work, I'm eager to see them when I get home.

Cleo's vertical stripes, lower on her neck by her shoulder..she does not have a dorsal stripe. When she is fully shed out for summer it is easier to see. Still hard to photogragh sense she is not a light colored horse.
