I have been sitting around with severe HMA withdrawal pains. I miss going out to camp and watch the Kigers so I have been thinking about next year.
Would anyone be interested in going out to the Kiger HMA one weekend this summer to a camp out for lack of a better word? I thought perhaps anyone interested in riding thier Kiger (guess we would allow non-Kigers ;D) on the HMA could join us. I have waited 5 years to be able to ride my Kiger out on the range and this is the year for me. I would be willing to ask BLM if we could get a Rangeland Specialist or Wild Horse Specialist to join us for a field trip and educate us in the issues on the HMA such as the forage and water and future plans. Mind you these are very general ideas, I'm open whatever folks want.
Camping is primitive, but we can replenish ice from a store about 6 miles away and there are alternative to tent camping not too far away at Crystal Hot Springs or the Narrows. Obviously I am sold on the whole experience but I invite you to come see for yourselves. Viewing will be be better this year than next; after the gather. I left the Riddle HMA out of this as you have to drive in further to get close to horses and in our opinion they are harder to find than on the Kiger.
For those not bringing a horse or horses, if you can hike a little, you could go up to one of the meadows when Rick sets up the camera to film. I take a pair of binoculars and a camera and just sit and watch.
So this is my "idea" for 2011. I have a list that existed long before the term "bucket list" became known and my original idea for 2011 was to ride Fit from Bend to Burns before the adoption. I actually started planning the trip; lining up a camper and planning the legs of the journey. I decided I don't have the time to make the trip so my HMA idea is a better choice. Rick had agreed to film as much of our ride as we can to share with everyone there and on the board.
We can offer out place as a stop over for anyone travelling through Bend and we can sleep a couple of people or if you have a camper or trailer we can offer electricity and water. We can house a few horses overnight too. C'mon, I can't be the only one out there with a sense of adventure. The child in me will never grow up. . Even if you can come for a day it will be fun.
