Okay....what is "spanish" to you in a horse? Certain conformation aspects, that brio......the flowing mane and tail ;D!!! Share some picts if you like!

Oh, yeah, the flowing mane and tail, that's it. My only qualification... ;D
No dishy Arab faces. Pretty or cute as they may be, it doesn't say Spanish to me. Can't ride a head, but that's what people see first.
I'm wondering about shoulders in your Kigers, as the ones that came in this fall were terribly straight. I had to do some reading to see if this was a Spanish trait, or if something is happening in the wild herd that is less than desirable (I've decided it was the later.)
Cresty necks. Not to the point of a horse being unable to move or bend, but not skinny little pencil necks. Just a little heavier on the top side.
Inverted V...or as others may call it, an A shape between the forelegs.
Sloping croup with low set tail.
Those are the things that stand out to me. Other than that, basic good conformation; well balanced body, one part blending into the next nicely, shorter cannon bones, sloping shoulders, etc.

I'm not an expert on Spanish conformation but I'll start with some preferences. I like an eye that is kind of triangular shaped. I think the problem I have with some Luso horses is that they have small eyes that are pointed on each end. Here is the triangular shape The other thing that says power to me is a good hip. These are all Kigers. I think this hip is good and these two are poor, the first one is also too straight in the leg There is a rounder, heavier neck as well. But the ultimate feature of a Spanish horse is their personality. Kind and generous, brave and curious. I understand that part of the PRE evaluation includes temperament. Does anyone have the guidelines used for PRE evaluation? As a side note, I saw a pictures of a couple of horses that I admire. One is Malabar www.viva-iberica.com/en/mains/main_horses.htmAnother is the famous Indiano XVIII www.gremlanfarms.com/syndicate.html

I do like the straight profile a large kind eye, wide chest, thicker neck and yes of course the long mane and tail. There is that way they float about and arena when free lungeing that makes a person go.. wow. Without being taught they seem to know how to dance on their own. Whether or not these are true spanish traits I do not know, they are what I have seen when I have observed some spanish breeds.

They want the "almond" shaped eyes in Lusos'. I see the small eye in the Lusos that are Veiga bred. Maybe it comes from all the in/line breeding in that line. In QH's, close breeding makes bug-eyes; just the opposite!

I love deep expressive eyes, no white rims, (my wacko paint had the white rims). I agree, the 'triangular' shaped eyes. I believe the eye tells a whole lot about the horse, they can be soft, gentle, intelligent, or they can be hard, cold and intense.
I was introduced to this one horse. It had been mistreated and was scared. I looked in his eye and I could see the fear plainly, but below the fear there seemed to be something else, like a desire to belong and feel safe. These people were trying to lift his feet and he just ran sideways each time. I talked to him for a while, scratching his withers and got him used to the feel of a rope around his body and his feet. Slowly I lifted one foot from the ground. He hopped sideways and then tensed like I was going to strike him. I scratched him some more and re lifted his foot. He allowed me to lift it fully from the ground with the rope. Then I ran my hands all along his hip, down his thigh, up again, down his hock, up again and then down to his pasturn, I gave him a slight squeeze and with one false start, he lifted his foot and let me hold it. I set it back down softly and rubbed back up to his hips and then went back to his withers, talking to him the whole time. His eyes told me so plainly that he wanted someone to trust. I don't know what happened to him after that day. But my sincerest hope is that someone has him that can see through the trauma to the horse that is hidden beneath the surface.

What about size? We have a tendency to breed for taller here in the US, although ponies have become popular in recent years with some eventers and folks who'd prefer not to fight gravity in their old(er) age

This is an example of an "ideal" Spanish Horse...(NOT Lusitano!). Here is a very imformative site you'all might enjoy: www.equiandalusian.com/inicio.cfmClick on the Morphology to see all the ideals and faults - very good examples!

As far as the Lusitano up top, that is what I like to see in a spanish/iberian horse....the head I just love; higher withers that the hip; back that flows into the croup and a naturally arched neck. Okay, as long as the buckskin is up, here is my black! If you'all are wondering what this is all about, there is a HUGE Lusitano auction about to commence in which there are imported horses from some of the very BEST breeders. The above two horses are mine and Lynns' picks if we had unlimited cash! If anyone is interested: www.lusitanocollection.com/
