We are in the process of starting nine colts...it continues to be quite the adventure, as this year we start many that are out of mares first foals for us.
This is Rico Suave; 3 year old pure Kiger, by Charro and out of Madonna. He is a full brother to my gelding, Rev, our "used to be" stallion, Desi and the nice mare we have for sale, Ora. He's the typical easy going, what-do-you-want-to-do guy that his brothers are too. He also looks like a stringbean still (like his brothers did at that age) and is closing in on 16 hands already. These boys have always been my favorite...
Here Eric has gotten Rico to lay down:
Then to sit up and relax before he stands up - most horses jump right up, but being the cool cucumber Rico is, this was easy for him:
Being as Ricos' momma died when he was five weeks old, we tried very hard not to coddle him or over handle him...as a result, he is actually very shy. Though he wants attention, he tends to turn his head away to the outside and give you his shoulder and neck to rub on. This happened because of the vet having to come out and take blood a few times to make sure he was getting the nutrition he needed after the mare died - he would just turn his head all the way around and not look at her. He will even do that with the farrier; give his left leg, but turn his head all the way to the right so he does not have to watch. It is something we are addressing now slowly, as it has become a habit, but you'll see him in picts be turned to the outside alot.
Rico and Eric:
I'll post more picts as he progresses...
