Thanks Tiffany....she is a cutie for sure! She was 8 days early and had very high respiration - unusual because that really was not that early (sometimes with they are really really early, you have to worry about lung development. No temp, no discharge, no cough - robust and gained weight daily, so we were stumped. She has kind of regressed with people, as when the vet came out to listen to her lungs and draw blood, before I could turn around, the vet tech had a death grip on her and shoved into a corner. I always handle my own foals for the vet; so that set her back some as far as coming up for loves but she is getting better every day about it - not being so shy. Her breathing is getting close to normal, so I am not too worried about it. She jumps around and plays just as hard as the rest of them!
I have not had an exhibition horse for about five years now and I keep watching all of these foals to see which one would fit into that well. I find the QH cross foals are very expressive and do lots of airs when they are young, but once they get big and get stocky, it just does not come together. Most likely it will be a pure Kiger or a half Lusitano...

Michelle, She is absolutely beautiful!!! I think I would have had the vet tech in the corner after that incident.

I think you're going to have to keep this one Michelle! Just cause I want to see her grow up. Wonderful. So, mild mannered southern lady like yourself, how many stitches did the vet tech need? I hope they learned how to handle a foal at least. Of course, if Momma had been our Tia she would have picked them up with her teeth and laid them out on the ground.

Dianne...you almost made me spit my sweet tea all over the computer with your "southern lady" comment! I must tell you I was born and raised in Chicago - south side - if that give you any indication of what came next! Momma was having a fit, but I kept her from getting into it and letting me handle it! Honestly, our QH mares do not have the same kind of drive those Kiger mares do.
One of my goals is to breed Kiger/QH cross with Kiger/Lusitano cross, so I will need to hold back a few fillies with the right attributes...

She is very cute and I agree about the vet tech, seems so many 'horse professionals' are so concerned about how much money they make, they discount the animals feelings, fears, etc., in favor of taking less time.

They obviously don't teach stall side manners at Vet School! I had one vet out to do a well foal exam, something I used to do and don't any more unless I suspect something wrong. Anyway, I said "you'd better say hello before you look at the foal" and he gave me a funny look and said hello to the foal! Obviously more used to "domestic" mares. I don't use him any more.

My vet does not use an assistant, he uses me to my full potential..LOL. After dealing with Fantasy over the years he has found the best person to handle my horses during any vet exam or emergency is me. I have learned alot along the way as well. I have had to use a differant vet in rare occassions, with assistants, who insist on doing the work themselves. In the end I have tell them to step aside and let me help.
My daughter is upset the owner of Scout's sire came to see Scout and she just grabbed him, around the chest and bum. Started telling my daughter she needed to sack him out rubbing him all over and poor little guy was just scared. It set him back a few days from trusting people getting close. He will let us get close rub him but hugs may take a bit longer now.
