We just had a great weekend over Memorial Day! My husband, and one of our daughters, Rachel (who is 11) and I participated in 3 days of a two week ride that crosses almost the whole state of Washington. It is hosted by the John Wayne Pioneer Wagons and Riders, and follows the bed of what used to be the Milwaukee Railroad. There were about 150 people participating last weekend, and that number will dwindle to about 75 who complete the whole 2 weeks. There were wagons of all types, and riders on all types of horses. We got lots of comments on our mustangs ("I didn't know they were so tall, or so short, or so stocky, or fill- in- the- blank"). Rachel's pony Dixie is just 13.1 hands, and so well behaved; that started a lot of conversations, as well as Conchetta's grulla color. Here is a shot of Rachel and I on the trail. You can see it is not difficult trail riding; mostly a flat gravel and dirt road, but lovely scenery, and very nice horse people of every kind. Here we are coming off a long high tressel over the Yakima River. It has been converted so it is a safe footing for horses. I was astonished at what Conchetta was willing to try! She did not want to stop for the pic, so she is fighting with me. Here is my hubby and Rachel, on our two Nevada mustangs. Folks were amazed we were doing this with the horses barefoot And Conchetta was so funny about wanting to be with this group of 4 dun, Norwegian Fjords; do you think she thought it was her long lost herd?

I don't know how I missed this thread!! Lil, that is just fantastic!! Rick told me about it yesterday when I stopped by. I am amazed at how far Conchetta has come. Wish I had known about the ride..... I would have loved to have tagged along. The three of you and your horses all look just awesome! Thanks so much for sharing the pics!

You guys look great! LOL about the Fjords and Conchetta! I really do think they're partial to their own colors. I've heard if you stick a gray in with bays that he'll be beat up. And we used to have a dark bay arab gelding and he was always an outcast with my Kigers. They never really associated with him -- grazed in different part of the pasture!
Thanks for sharing! ;D

Wonderful experience, and I agree that you all look great!!! Amazing preconceived notions people come up with! MUSTANGS, CHANGING ONE MIND AT A TIME. Maybe a new slogan. Linda D

Lisa, Kevin, I would be so pleased if you used it as a slogan. I so admire the work that you have done with and for the Kigers and other mustangs. You make relationship possible! If I could find someone like you for my Kigers, I would be a very happy person! Linda D

I agree with the color predjudice among horses.....My friend has a large ranch with about 40 horses....And they naturally migrate to same colored horses....Who'd ever believe this about horses....But I agree....
Lovely pics and sounds like an awesome ride! Great job getting your mustangs out there......
I love that slogan too.....The other slogan I love is "Ride the brand".....

My favorite quote on this board is "I am so busy I can't tell if I found a rope or lost a horse"! That is so ME! I can't remember who to give credit to for that one..

It is there instinct to migrate towards color. There is safety in numbers, espcially if you'er all the same color! This reminds me of a neat story told my MaryAnn Simmons, wild horse behaviorlist. She was in the southwest somewhere doing research on some heards there and came across a pinto heard. She was observing them for some time wondering were the stallion was. After quite a while she saw some movement. Against a rock wall stood the stallion, sorrell and white pinto, against the colored rocks he was almost invisible! So cool, my favorite story. The Kigers in there area are also invisible at times. Lisa

;D That's me! I have it on a plaque in my kitchen and everything.
The first time I heard it I just pictured myself standing there with a rope in my hands having totally forgotten why.
