We spent Friday filming on the Kiger HMA and saw a total of 9 horses. We saw 5 bachelors between the Ant Hill and the Lambing Grounds; all dun. One had a freeze brand. One was maybe a smutty dun - I know that isn't a real color, but his color was somewhere between Dino and a regular dun. He wasn't the least reddish, more a golden brown. They all looked healthy, shiny coats, well fed, active, no visible injuries, cuts, etc. One of them does have a scar on his left butt cheek, visible thorough the lens on zoom, but it doesn't look recent, the hair has grown over it.
We saw a band of 4 horses, all duns, on the lower road before the resevoir; a stallion, a mare, about a 2 year old and another male I think, altho he had to have been at least 3 years old. All of them also looked good.
Some of the gates are open, the one at the old wooden horse trap is one that was always closed last year. Nothing was visible from the viewing area. We didn't hike Yank Creek, we saw nothing on the Lambing Grounds, and no fresh tracks at the resevoir or on any of the small trails leading up the hill from it. To us, it looks pretty green for now and water is flowing.
I hoped we would see foals this trip. The mare we saw may be in foal, if so she is not due for a while. We didn't see the grullas from last summer anywhere, but it just means we aren't looking in the right places. I will be so glad when I can ride a hores out there as we can't move around on foot very efficiently. We are looking at flying an rc plane and remote camera around to try to locate them before we hike over hill and dale.
I have no still shots. I was afraid the clicking would drive them off, they were very alert as always and I let Rick creep closer while I hung back with binoculars.
