Is Chinook his sire....looks like he may have his nice head. Yeah, I would wait on the hangers for awhile!

Yes, Chinook and Sedona are his parents. Sedona is an SMKR product out of Doc Martin and Belle. I picked out Sedona and then found out that her dam, Belle, is out of Steens Kiger and Quail, my favorite combination of Rick's. This is Chinooks second really light grulla. Teanna is this color as well. Blue and Rio are his regular grulla kids.

Now I know where that gorgeous build and substance comes from. Those Doc/Belle Kigers have a lot to offer this breed!!! Glad your waiting to geld this guy. It sounds like he may just be a stallion prospect.
I have seen a number of pictures of Doc Martin but have never had the opportunity to meet him in person. What, in your opinion does he offer in the areas of mind set and temperment? I would love to know more about his personality.

Well, judging from Sedona his contribution is a pretty head and sweetness. I've only seen one picture and never met him so I couldn't say. I wasn't impressed by his picture, but you know how pictures are.

Very handsome Dianne -- I always keep your boys in the back of my head for a future breeding to Cali. I'd love to get another foal out of her, for myself. ;D

I haven't color tested him yet to see if he has a red gene, but he would be a really nice cross for her. He's not afraid of anything, which is good and bad. Its hard to discipline him as he's just not upset by anything.

Are you going to be keeping a very small breeding herd Dianne? You definitely have good taste in horses. He looks like a very nice boy and I can't wait to see what he will look like. He kind of reminds me of Rio.

I'm keeping a few horses, Teanna for one and Lark. I'll need a foal now and then to play with and I have several ideas of horses to cross Teanna and Lark with. I might keep one stud prospect if I have one that makes sense and I have the right pasture situation. But more likely I'll sell Blue and Mojito eventually. Its hard to keep a stallion if you're not breeding him. By the time they are ready the economy should have changed and there will be a demand for great stallions to breed to again. Blue is very nice and Mojito has the clear grulla color that is so hard to come by. Pretty neat that he was the last foal last year. If I feel they are good enough to be an asset to the breed I will sell them to the right breeder. Until then I get to watch them grow up and play with them!

Dianne -- Am I right to think that since he's grulla (which means he doesn't have the agouti) my only chances if bred to Cali would be grulla or red dun (assuming the foal inherits the dun gene of course?)

He is growing up very nicely. It will be very interesting to see how he matures.

Joan, yes those are the possibilities with a red dun. I should get him color tested huh...then I'd know what he could throw. Nice thing with him is that he didn't get the sooty gene. So since Caliente is a very light apricot dun you would have a great chance of a very light clear grulla. Or if he does have a red gene you would have a 50/50 chance of another Cali, very light red dun. For those who like this stuff about color genes there CAN be the rare red dun with an agouti gene (bay gene). Since a red dun has no black the agouti gene can hide. But that's not the case here.

Now that's interesting! I've never heard of the red dun carrying agouti -- sure throws a monkey wrench in my very limited color (gene) knowledge. Right now I'll just dream -- looks like I have time though, since he's still gotta grow up. But it'll also buy me time to sooth my husband into it. ;D PS: Dianne -- Loving the saddle! I need to get someone to take pictures of us using it but it is soooo comfortable and fits us perfectly! ;D
