Today we had our first local 4-H horse show of the year. We took Conchetta, my 18 year old Kiger mare who was adopted at 12, and I just started riding this past February. My 14 year old daughter rode her in walk/trot English classes, and I was SOOO pleased! She was not willing to go anywhere near the rail (too many scary lookin' people hanging out there!), but other than that moved out smoothly and willingly. She was worried about the judge approaching with the clip board when she was lined up at the end, and leaned as far away as she could, but didn't move her feet. Grace gave the judge a brief explanation of the mare's reaction, and then the judge approached slowly and gave her a nice scratch.
I took my two year old, Stella, for the longe line and adult showmanship clases, just to get her some exposure to the general hubub. She was so good. We got second in the showmanship, because every time I got her squared, she would last about 10 or 15 seconds and then get distracted and forget. But I was very pleased with her!
And my 11 year old Rachel, on her Nevada mustang pony, Dixie.
