My mare and foal have been apart for about 5 months now and the filly has even been at the Langly's place getting some ground manners worked on. so this weekend i put the filly in with mom after they were done being trimmed by the farrier and all of a sudden i hear....SLURP SLURP SLURP! the filly was NURSING and mom was ok with it...any way so later when i was brushing mom i thought i would actually see if there was milk.I started to try and milk her teat i wasent getting anything...so i started to point it towards me so i could see if even a tiny bit would come out. I got a huge fat stream of milk right in the FACE ....i guess she still had milk. I have now learned that even if you REALLY think that there cant be any milk in there...never look it in the eye. ;D he he he

A few years back Bill (Wild Sage Ranch) bought an aged Hackney pony mare. They put her out with the Kiger weanlings as a baby sitter. Everything was fine until the next morning. It seems that the second you put her with youngsters or even near them she starts to bag up and would let any foal nurse at leasure. Although this was great news for our serogate mare program, it completely defeated the purpose for which she was bought. LOL!!!! Some mares just automatically start to bag up and produce milk when around the young ones.
