I am CELEBRATING!!! I have an older Kiger mare, who I rode for the first time yesterday! When I went to to the Kiger adoption in 2003 , it was my first time getting a wild horse. I was strongly encouraged to get a young horse, and I was looking for a two or three year old mare. After bidding, and winning a lovely three year old dun, I had money left to spend. I had enjoyed looking at all the horses in the other pens, but not with an eye to purchase. Then this 12 year old, beautiful grulla mare came up for bid, AND NO ONE WAS BIDDING ON HER! Well, I just couldn't help myself, and my hand shot up. How hard could it be, to gentle an older horse after all. (Yes, you may all laugh at me). Here she is the first day home.
It has been SUPER hard, not only because of her age, but her personality, and other life things for me. So my ability to work with her has not been steady. Last summer I started doing some ground work with my 2 year old, and I thought why not do all the same stuff with her. I did a bunch of ground driving through the fall, trail in hand obstacles, and ponying her on trails. Here is a pic of driving; I have carabeeners clipped to the martingale rings on my saddle, and longe lines run through them.
I boosted my daughter up to sit on her a couple weeks ago, But today was my first ride on my horse! She is coming 18 years old, and her name is Riddle Conchetta. She has been super skittish, and slow to trust, and painfully slow at learning every new thing, so I am delighted to see how relaxed she was. She didn't seem worried at all. I hope some of you will get to meet her some day, either at a Kigerfest, or maybe a Mustang demo. Sorry for the poor lighting in the pics, it was late afternoon.
