Hi, I've added a couple of posts in the last couple of days, but wanted to introduce myself and my Kiger properly. I am Colleen, Maddie's owner, partner, guardian... etc. I bought her as a domestically-bred 4-year-old 2 years ago, and she has been quite a project, but we are finally clicking now. I had to retire my QH gelding and brought her into the family to become my new trail partner and mounted search and rescue mount, if all goes well. This little horse has that mustang stamina and loves the trails. We have a lot of beautiful trails in the Bay Area. She is not the laid back Kiger I was expecting, but she has been a great teacher. And she's so pretty, in fact, I get rather tired of everyone telling me how pretty she is... gads, never thought that would happen. I'm going to see if I can get the hang of adding photos here... If I succeed. The petite dark-haired woman roping off of her is the trainer who "saved" her, they make a very pretty pair, unfortunately I'm the "other one."

What a pretty girl Maddie is. Nice to have you on here Colleen. Can't wait to hear more stories of you two. Pretty lucky how you guys found each other. It's nice that she found such a patient person to work with her.

Hi Maddie, welcome to our little family, we are a diverse bunch but have one thing in common.....the Kiger. So you are thinking of doing search and rescue with her? That's fabulous. There is a gentleman who also does that with scenting horses. He uses Mustangs as a rule and I think has recently added a Kiger to his group. I think it would be so exciting to have you and Mattie doing search and rescue. Please keep us updated if you decide to go that route. Kelly Edited to add: Here is the link for scenting horses: www.airscentinghorse.com/ He also offers clinics and so much more for those who might want to get involved.

That would be Terri Nowacki. My mounted SAR unit actually had him come out to Calif. 3 or 4 years ago to do one of his first clinics on air scenting. Old Rio, my QH, flunked the tests, but another member's little mustang was the star when it came to air scenting. He'd never tested Arabians before and they were good at it too. It really depends on the age of the horse (younger the better) and the "play" factor. It's better if horses are interested in playing games (and love treats). His clinic was excellent and I recommend him to anyone, even if you don't want to take the time to train a horse to air scent. The unit has been asking to bring him out again, so maybe in the next year or two I'll find out about Maddie's interest in air scenting.

Welcom Colleen & Maddie! That air scenting is fascinating. All my Kigers are ground sniffers and do quite a bit of it when in a new paddock or out on the trail. I'd never even thought of it as something that could be used with them. Wow.

That is really neat about the scenting...when we work with our young horses and trail and split up, some of them go right to sniffing the air to find where the other horse went, others heads go straight to the ground.
I have to repeat a funny story about my avid hunting husband. Spends mucho $$ on all these high tech "no scent" clothes, has a special bag for them, washes them (and himself) in no scent stuff and even has no scent boots. Every time he goes in the back 60 acres and the herd of horses comes by, the Kiger mare stops, smells the air and takes everyone off like bats out of hell....!!! He gets so mad - dang mustangs!

Yup, your husband can wash the clothes, but can't wash the smell off himself. Heard one story about a man's horse that would be fine to catch some days, but on other days wouldn't come near him. Turned out he'd "stink" after coming home from work (don't remember what he did) so the horse didn't want to come near him, but on weekends & on the days he washed before going out, he'd smell ok.
