I was just contacted by a new person who had come across this add. They were looking to buy a Kiger and thought that this one would be perfect. When I checked out the ad, I realized right away that it was the farthest thing from a Kiger. This type of thing really fries my fritters and I wish there was something I could do about it. Here is the ad: This 11 year old mare, Originally from the black hills of south Dakota is A descendent of an Indian pony from the battle of the little big horn. This Kiger Spanish Mustang traces back to the spanish horses brought over in the 16 hundreds. Here is the link: www.usedwinnipeg.com/classified-ad/7229224Thanks for letting me rant. Kelly

That type of thing really gets my goat too... But then I have to remember that it's usually out of ignorance.

I like how the ad calls the mare ..this type of Kiger Mustang. But JoanMRK is right, it out of ignorance and the belief that a Kiger Mustang is any dun Mustang.

Don't know if it will do any good, but I turned it in and explained that that is not a Kiger and where Kigers are from

I agree that a lot of this is out of ignorance, but it is still doing damage to this breed. New comers and those just being introduced to the breed are getting the wrong idea. It is also portraying the Kiger as a colored horse rather than the pure breed it is.
This is what upsets me so much. I have actually had people come to me who wanted to register their dun horse as a Kiger and then get really mad when I am forced to tell them it is not a Kiger. I have even had them argue with me saying that they were told it is a Kiger so it must be and that they were going to get it DNA tested to prove what breed it is. Last time I checked, there was no DNA test that confirmed the specific breed of any horse. Please correct me if I am wrong!!!! Yes it is ignorance and it is hurting the Kiger breed by fostering a lot of misinformation that is detrimental to the breed as a whole!!!!
I feel that it is important for us as Kiger owners to put our heads together and try and come up with some sort of solution. I am in the process of designing a new page for the site that will help others understand just what a kiger is. I would really appreciate any help or suggestions as to what should be included in that page.
Signed, Frustrated and exasperated.....

Kelly ....I do believe each registry has a set of conformation standards for the the Kiger Mustang horse. Regardless of how individuals feel, the dun factor is highly regarded and a main focus of the Kiger Mustang, just as the thick mane and tail is as well. As with those less educated will confuse the Paints and Pintos, the Kiger Mustangs will get confused with other fine dun Mustangs. It is up to the registries to educate the public on the standards that apply to their registry. I belive it is up to all us Kiger Mustang owners to educate those who ask and other horse folk, that the Kiger Mustang is not just a fancy colored horse.
