Have any of you adopted an older Kiger from this year's adoption? I'm looking at a yearling colt #8207, but I keep coming back over and over to the 6 year old stud #8241. I keep telling myself I don't have the time to devote to an older stallion... I need to stick to a baby that will be easier to gentle. But his eyes look so kind... and his forelock is so pretty blowing in the wind... and he's built so nice.... *sigh*. If only I wasn't on the other side of the country. I'd spend a week out at the corrals just watching them, lol. Anyway, back to the original question. Have any of you gentled an older stallion? And does anyone that was at the adoption in person have any opinions on him?   |

I can tell you this he is looking so much better then he did at the adoption. Some more time with some good hay has done him some good. Last time I saw him he was skin and bones and real ruff around the edges. As far as conformation he most certainly has the ol' Kiger look more so then the younger horses there. I have no experience working with older stallions, from what I have heard from others it is very individual, every horse is differant and the real great benefit to the older Mustang is you can start them right away. No wait for the them to grow up or mature. It is train, then right into the saddle and down the road.
I often go over to another horse board and chat, you will have some competition should you choose to bid on him, he is a favorite of others as well.

Honestly, If I have a lot of competition on him, I probably won't bid high. I'm not set up for a full grown stallion at the time, and I'm not sure I could devote enough time to him to gentle him and make something out of him. A yearling seems the way to go for me.... but he sure is pretty.... and man he would make a nice stud. Just something about his eyes that gets me.

If it is the same guy that was in with the old grey stud (I will look at my stuff tonight when I get a minute), he was VERY VERY stiff in that front end. He took super short steps. I am not sure if he was injured or beat on, but he looked miserable. Conformationally, he does have some issues up front too. His shoulder and elbow angles do not tie in well, nor does his neck into his chest. It seems as if his legs are close to the front of his shoulder instead of more centered. That could be the reason for they issues up front too. I'll have to look at my stuff and see if that was the same stud. He did catch my eye at first!

Ahh, Michelle I was thinking his front shoulder/neck area looked a bit off myself, but I'm no conformation expert by a long shot. He looks to thick in that region to me almost like his neck comes off his back too far back but gosh what a beautiful regal face he has.

I think the shoulder angle is okay, but the elbow (from the point of shoulder to the back of the front leg) is either too short for the angle or the angle is too sharp for the length...

 Here he is at the adoption. I didn't spend much time watching them, so couldn't tell you about his movement at all, but know I love him in the photos  And yes, he was with the old gray. |

I can't see it well, but it looks like the horse behind him has a nice face with good definition, there's a fence rail that runs behind the horse, making it hard to really see the lower neck where it joins at the jaw but from the little I can tell, looks nice.

He has an intensity to his eye. I get a feeling of a wound spring from him. If he was adopted I sure would like to know more about him.

8238 was adopted yes, I just loved his chrome. I know it is not a desired trait in Kiger Mustangs but for a gelding it would make for a flashy ride. I have to agree on the placement of the stud in questions forelegs they seem to set to far foreward, his shoulder angle seems fine as well as his neck set with chest. You just want to go up and push his legs back a bit further.

Maybe that's what makes him look too 'thick' in that region to me, the set of his legs.

So I can't tell from the pics really, and they haven't posted any new ones. But if he's lame or there's something wrong with his conformation, that would make sense as to why he wasn't adopted. I think I've decided to go for the colt anyway. I just don't feel that I have the time to devote to an older stud right now. I have 4 other horses, a little girl and a husband, and a job to worry about too. I think a younger horse would be easier to gentle and would adjust to being with my other horses faster.
