It would be kind of neat to have a section just for tack and such. I ran across this site of absolutely gorgeous hand made saddles, www.skyhorse.com/sky/index.html

Those saddles are truly works of art!! I adore the black petroglyph one!! I can honestly say I'll never own one, not my gig or priority. I can't even imagine paying $9000 for a saddle and then having it not fit my horse or my other horses! The great saddle search is frustrating enough as it is! And in endurance, it's all about comfort rather than looks, although we do throw in bright colors for the fun of it!! My horse is decked out in lime green and purple. He doesn't mind and I can always spot my ride photograph! A tack section would be nice though, maybe a way to talk about fitting, links to great deals, a way to trade or advertise if you have tack you'd like to sell. I personally love anyplace that I can find a good deal or can post about something I have that someone else can get use from.

Heidi - what saddles have you found to be the most comfortable and that fit your horse properly? Im hoping to try a few endurance rides this summer with Lakota so any info you can give me to prepare and what to expect would be greatly appreciated.

I use a Free and Easy endurance saddle on my arab gelding right now. It's a flexible panel saddle, pretty lightweight, leather, made in the UK, nice leather, is going on 6 years old and still looks and fits great. Ash has done three 100 milers, a couple 75/80's and quite a few 50's and and other than our very last ride, (100 miler) has always gotten all A's on vet scores for back/tack. This last ride was very flat and my ride time was something like 17 hours. I think such extended posting times with my legs in pretty much the same position has shown me that the short billets I currently have need to be switched out for long ones and then I can use a dressage girth. The buckles are pretty much under my knees and with all the posting, that was the area he was sore. That and where his elbow comes back and rubs over the top of the girth had a gall. It's a Sports Medicine girth, neoprene but it has a nylon top and his elbow rubbed on it. First time in over 5 years, so not sure if it was because it was such a flat ride or because the girth is older and maybe the material has gotten "crispier"? Anyway, I ordered the long billets, just need to get them installed and have an all neoprene covered dressage girth picked out. I love the saddle though and have a bad lower back. It's the one saddle I've been able to ride in for more than 2 hours and be able to get back in the saddle the next day. It seats me more in a dressage position and I am not always trying to lean forward to get my legs under me. It also is adjustable, is fairly light (about 20 lbs.) and the saddle pads are booties so I only have to throw the saddle on as the pads are already attached to the saddle panels. If you do a google search, it should come up pretty close to the top. I would guess Cal will use the same saddle as so far, he's built similarily to his Uncle Ashy. At least at this age it looks like he'll be similar enough.
