Thought you all might like to hear about a few mustang and mustang crosses that have excelled in endurance. The first is a mare that is still alive, belongs to my friend and teammate Naomi Preston, the horse is a Breyer model. "Mustang Lady" has 73 rides and 72 completions, 5255 miles from 1986 to 1997, 6 Best Condition awards, 25 100 mile rides. 4 were Tevis completions and two were 2nd and 4th place in one of the toughest 100 mile endurance rides in the country. Naomi is now riding Mustang Lady's daughter, Karlady, who is half arab, she has nearly 1600 miles, 27 completions out of 29 rides and 1 Best Condition. She is currently in 8th place for our War Mare award and is currently in 3rd place nationally for overall points and 3rd place for rider weight division! Robin Hood is a Spanish Mustang that has nearly 10,000 miles, 27 BC's, and 26 100 mile completions. www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/prog/wild_horse_and_burro/news/success_stories/adopted_wild_horses.htmlwww.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov/spotlight/lady.htmwww.cooldownunder.com/horses/karahty/karahty_progeny.html (scroll down for a pic of Karlady and Naomi) tteamforendurance.com/aboutnaomi.aspxI know they aren't kigers, but still, pretty darn impressive! I did a search with the word Kiger in the name, Kiger Bridger has 2795 miles, mostly 50 mile rides, 2 attempts at Tevis, but unfortunately pulled both times. Energizer is a mustang/arab cross, has 4725 miles, 14 BC's, has 2 100 mile completions and has no pulls listed in the AERC records. 89 rides, 89 completions! heidi

Wow, thanks for posting the links. Mustang Lady has always been a "love" of mine. I watched her when she got second(?) in the Tevis that year, many moons ago now (I was helping crew for my friend Jane), and she has been a sort of hero for me. I love that horse, please give her a kiss on the nose next time you see her. I've also got her Breyer model, it is beautiful and last time I checked, worth about $140.00 in perfect condition! ;D Mine is, in excellent condition but I won't be selling it... It'll be passed down to my daughter when she is OLD.

Thank you, Endurancerider. I've read up on Robin Hood and think he's a fabulous horse. I'll now have to read up on Mustang Lady.
A friend of mine who recently battled breast cancer has decided she needs to live life to the fullest and entered a 50 mile endurance ride with her mustang. She rode with a good friend of hers (someone who's competed in the Tevis) and the friend said not to think about coming in high in the rankings on your first ride. But they ended up finishing in the top 25%. I think she's hooked!
I'd love to get Jet going on endurance. Might try a 25 mile competitive or two this year if money allows.

Tracey, I've often thought I should enter my little Annie Oakley, she's a really fast trotter, lots of go power and heart, and super smooth to ride... Maybe someday! ;D

If there are any NW riders out there that would like to come to an endurance ride this year, please let me know. I could meet you and give you some pointers so that you finish! There are two in particular that are the MOST fun and fairly centrally located. One is called the Mt. Adams ride, we camp in a huge meadow and Mt. Adams looks like you could reach out an touch it. The second is about 16 miles from that ride and it's called Klickitat Trek. This ride has the absolute best footing (my friend rode her arab there barefoot on a 30 miler last year) and there is not a ton of hills. We camp in the Glenwood Rodeo grounds. It's also a 2-day ride, so you could bring two different horses or ride one horse both days. Both rides offer fun rides (12-15 miles) on Saturday, both offer 50 milers and Mt. Adams has a 75 and Klickitat has an 80. Klickitat also has a 2-day 100 and the second day still has the LD (30 miler) and the 50 miler. Ride managers at both rides are lovely people, trails are well marked, completion awards are usually shirts of some sort, vets are excellent and the trails are lovely! If anyone wants to come and needs a mentor or just a contact person, please let me know! I usually ride one day w/my daughter on the LD as her horse is older and then do the 50 or possibly the 80 this year (in anticipation for Tevis.) Also, our NW endurance convention will be held at the Sheratin Hotel near PDX on the last weekend of January. (Friday/Saturday.) If anyone would like more details about that, please let me know. We have vendors and speakers for both days.

Heidi, I'm in Bellingham, so we should make a point of getting together sometime!
Also, we're planning an all women, all mustang ride in Oregon come August. If you're interested in joining, we'd love to have you!
Joan, Dix had said she and Otter were wanting to come ride...you gonna come with them? I need to email her as I've not heard from her since the fires which was ages ago.

Hmmm... That'd be fun Tracey. I'll see if I can get a baby sitter... That's my biggest problem, other than that, I'd love to! How long would the ride be? I'd need to set my mom up to see if she can get the time off in order to take care of my child.

I'm planning on a week, but we'll have a base camp in the Steens and be riding out from there, so if you wanted to come for just a couple of days or the whole week, it would work.

Hi Heidi,I posted information about kigers & mustangs in endurance years ago on the SMKR board. There is a rumor that Energizer is 1/2 kiger, out of an arab mare accidentally bred when a kiger stallion jumped a fence.I met him at Oregon Outback in 2004,which he won 4 out of 5 days & was overall winner. My kiger,Amigo completed Chamberlaine Creek 30 miler completely barefoot after only about 20 trail rides his first year under saddle in 2006.He's been doing just dressage since because he's grown kinda large for endurance but he may return to the trails this year.

According to Tom Jones who owns him, he thinks he's Spanish Mustang/Arab cross. However, who really knows. The horse is in his teens now and kigers weren't so predominate 20 years ago were they? Energizer looks very TB to me personally, other than he's a pretty small horse. Bay, kind of a roman nose. I can ask on the PNER board though. Someone there would know and Tom's wife posts sometimes.
