I should probably introduce myself, Heidi Larson, from SW Washington. I have 4 arabs currently, although one will be leaving to go back to his original owner having had some new trail experience and one is my stepdaughter's horse. So "technically" I have 2 arabs and a 1/2 arab-1/2 kiger gelding. He will be 2 in April, he's a lineback dun, tiny white coronet band in the rear and a star, he's around 14.0 hands right now, (rump is a bit higher) I don't know if I have any new good pics but I'll look. Some I took this summer for sure. He's different from the arabs in that he's got thicker skin, wasn't sure I liked that too much in the beginning, but he sweet and tries hard. I think he may have some food allergies (and no-see-ums) as he had sweet itch all summer and rubbed out his mane, facial hair and belly hair. He still itches in the cold weather with no bugs, just not as crazily. I pulled all grain/alfalfa and it seems to have helped. He still tries to grab a bite off the stack when he comes into his stall at night and I think it is just too rich for him. His mom is the arab and she did not have any problems with bugs and his sire was Kiger Sundance. One of my geldings is retired from endurance (23) , my current riding horse is 12 and has over 1500 miles, over half were top ten and 4 Best Condition awards. He has never been pulled and has completed three 100 milers. (hoping I don' t jynx myself here!) We were planning on Tevis last summer but since it was cancelled, we're postponing that til next summer hopefully. I'm hoping Cal (who is currently reg. 1/2 arab) will like endurance. His neck is kind of short and thick and for endurance, & you do like a little longer neck, his nostrils are also slits, I hope he can open them when he needs to! He does have a great rear end, legs and feet, short back and nice shoulder, big kind eye and even if he's not made for endurance, he'll stay here forever! We can always do something different together. He's been ponied and we've been on hikes. He was a biting brat til he was gelded this summer. I waited as long as I could but then the neighbors brought home 2 mares and I didn't want any accidents. His registered half arab name is Kiger Caliente and his pedigree is on allbreedpedigree.com

Hi Heidi. I am north of you in Auburn WA. Welcome. When you go to register your guy in a Kiger registry, I know that in some ( KMA for sure ) you will need to put something in front of the word Kiger as that word beginning a horses name is reserved for freezebranded horses from Kiger or Riddle HMA's. For example, my junior stallion Kody's registered name is HS My Kiger Kodiak. We would love to see pictures of your boy! Kim

Welcome to the board Someone else has a Cal out there. We just aquired a Cal this year only ours is a full Arab, our Cal is short for Califred. There are others here that ride Kigers endurance hopefully they will check in to let you know more about their experiences. I know mine has a great love of adventure and the trail is where she shines.

Here are photos from this past summer, it was Cal's first trailer ride "alone" and our first trail "walk". (6 miles.) My husband came and took the pics. It was shortly after Cal was gelded. He did great and seemed to have fun, got a little wound up from seeing other horses though. Funny, the riders asked if he was an arab or a mustang! I had to laugh as they were both right! He looks more mustang to me, except maybe in the rear, it's more of an immature arab butt to me. A friend of mine rides his kiger crosses in endurance (Limited Distance actually) and he has kiger/QH crosses. Chuck Cowen? He also does CMO rides. His are a little more heavily muscled with the QH half. There are a few purebreds that come to the rides too, but I've only ever seen them do LD rides. (25-30 miles) www.rockyou.com/show_my_gallery.php?source=ppsl&instanceid=129676074Let me know what you think! heidi

Great pictures Heidi. Cal looks great - I can see the Arab in his head also...I don't think Ive ever seen a dun Arab (even though he's 1/2 kiger) , I bet you get a lot of questions!

Hi Heidi, Welcome!
I own a Sundance son and bred for a Sundance son a handful of years ago now... (gosh, I think that colt is four now!), and he is owned by an endurance lady out of the Mojave Dessert area in SoCal. She does Tevis as well, (has for years), and was hoping to take Bodie on it as the first Kiger to complete but I'm not sure she's decided he'll be good for endurance. Her next best bet was just to do packing with her boyfriend and his mules. ;D But, I think that all of us who have Sundance progeny are very fortunate and yours looks like he is developing VERY nicely! I like his look he reminds me of Sundance quite a bit though I can see the Arab influence which to me, is a great cross. I hope Cal works out for you and your dreams.
PS: I have a Caliente too, but a feminine version... "Cali." ;D

Hi Endurance Rider and welcome to the board. We are a great bunch of people who love talking Kigers and sharing our accomplishments and adventures. Your Kiger Arab cross is gorgeous. I too bred an Arab mare with a Kiger and got a red dun sabino filly. I registered her as My Sunrise Surprise but around the barn we call her Baby as she is just the sweetest little girl with a very curious and kind mind. Here is a picture of her in Feb 2008 at just under one year.
