Well I braided Bella's mane for the 1st time to help tame it to go all on one side. It was split right down the middle. She was so great - she practically went to sleep, as you can see from the photo. Not a good photo, taken by my cell plus she was filthy. As most of you guys have been getting snow, we were pounded by rain for 2 weeks, the horses were extremely nasty but enjoying the mud and the temps have been in the 60's Also had the farrier (Penny) out a few weeks ago to trim Bella's feet. She did great, but she's still a youngster and hadnt learned to stand still with her hoof up for longer than 3 minutes but will come with time. Penny is so amazing with horses and takes her time with them. She was very pleased with her and has sense become a kiger fan after dealing with Lakota and her!! No more new pictures as she's very fluffy and stays pretty nasty right now!! So will wait til spring, but she's really starting to grow.

Don't kigers have the prettiest manes to braid? I just love what that bi-coloring does... ;D Looks great!

Her braids are looking pretty good and with her lovely bi-coloring on her mane, I can understand why you would want to have mane all to one side, so you can see that coloring all the better

Yes the bi-coloring is very pretty when braided. She has it on both sides,so it took me a while to figure out which side I wanted it to be on. I have been working her in the round pen and getting her connected up with me, Ive been doing sessions of only about 15 - 20 minutes right now...how long are you supposed to work them at this age? I know it shouldnt be that long because there attention span isnt too long right now. I try to keep it short and productive... any suggestions on training that I could start doing at this age?

Ah, like the cute little braids...Bella is going to be one gorgeous mare! As far as the round pen, I have always heard that in youngsters try to stick to walking and trotting....And no more than 10-15 minutes..The smaller the roundpen, the more stress it puts on their joints when they trot/canter....How about teaching her to ground drive??? That can get her used to wearing a surcingle so it's good when you go to saddle her up (she's used to something around her middle then), and of course all the other obvious benefits of learning to ground drive....Also I have been doing in hand trail courses with my colt.....of course trailer loading.....just explore and have a blast...OH and SEND PICS! VBG!

Oh yes, great thinking Angela on the in hand trail courses. That I can do. I do plan to pony her alot come spring on the trails to get her used to that, but only short rides.
I did know that alot of lunging could cause damage to there joints/muscles/etc so I dont make her canter, I just trot her around a few times until she's connected with me then I use the rest of the time de-spooking and getting her used to me/stuff/etc
The driving is a great idea also, although I dont know much about it, I will have to do some reading up on that but I do like all that driving intales because you do have alot of stuff hanging/flopping/etc all over them which helps them get used to a lot.
thanks Angela for your response, great idea's!!

thanks Angela for your response, great idea's!! Hey, no problem.....Let me know what you do; it'll probably spark some ideas for me too! Cord is only 1.5yrs old so it'll be awhile before we do anything more...Although Jessi did lean over him the other day and he hardly flinched.....but no serious rider up for quite a while so we too will need inspiration! Well - it looks like the braids worked, it's all on one side for now Angela - is Cord the one you adopted at the "07 adoption? If it is, you've done a lot with him. That's great. How is it adoption a young one like that? Is it easier than an adult? Are they still flighty at things or grow out of that? Just curious - not sure Id have the nerve to adopt a wild adult, I do want to one day, I know I could learn a whole lot gentling it, but want to wait and make sure I have more time and experience.
