Okay, I know this has been talked about before and with the state of things as of late, maybe it is time to impliment a program. Lets toss around some ideas of getting together a rescue for these horses. Maybe someone on this board knows how to go about setting up a non-profit organization. We will need foster homes nationwide. I have space here to take horses and have ability to do alot of rehab: physical and training issues.
I know this is a tough time for everyone, but maybe we can get some of the registries to sponsor some horses, set up donations to help foster homes, etc. Maybe some of you know some transport companies that can help out with transport at a discount to get these horses moved.
Lets build a network and see what we can get done.

You'll need by-laws, a board of directors, and I believe the cost is $500 to apply for a 501c3.

I think that would be wonderful. I for one have experessed the desire to see such a rescue set up. I know nothing about the business side of non-profit ventures I must admit. To be honest at this point and time it is a struggle to keep my house in order and hang on to what I have. But you have to start somewhere and there is no time like the present. I am not sure how I can help out right now, but as things progress and ideas are tossed about, we shall see what I can donate to help.

Michelle:
On behalf of the CKMR and myself, I would love to participate in a Kiger rescue. Please let me know how we can help.

Michelle,
Right now I can't physicaly take in any more horses but I know there are other ways in which I can assist. I would be happy to make a financial contribution (I'll commit to $100.00) should you wish to move forward with the creation of a board of directors, by-laws and 501c3 application.
There aren't too many Kiger owners/breeders down here in FL (Yancy and us as far as I know at this point) and I doubt anyone will want to ship a rescue this far south anyway. With that said we certainly can volunteer our assistance when it comes to paperwork or organizational matters. In addition, many times donations of tack and supplies are needed to support the poor rescues and minimize the impact on the foster home. A network could be set up to try and obtain donated medications, supplies and tack that could be sent to the foster homes.
As a side note my husband and I belong to the Free Spirit Mustang and Burro Club down here and we do something similiar when it comes to finding new homes for unwanted or abused mustangs.

Maybe a way to get around the fee of starting yet another Kiger organization: would one of the registries step up and this could be an off shoot from them? Don't know the particulars but seems like if they are in place, maybe there is a way for it to work. Other horse industries are stepping up to take care of their own also. I wonder how they are doing it? They probably have more money to draw from and a bigger base, but I agree: horse people are going to have to start taking care of horse people.

That is exactly what I was hoping...one of the registries would step up that was already established. The only thing they would really have to do is put someone in charge of it and be a hub. There are plenty of folks that can take rescues, do rehab and most importantly, do some training to make the horses usable and desirable so they can get homes.
With donations it can fund the actual rescues (whether it be as simple as picking them up or purchasing low priced Kigers in need), and help take up some of the costs of the foster homes.
When we did the expo this weekend, the biggest problem I saw with this huge group of rescue horses, is that they desperately needed training. They did a great job of getting them healthy and trusting, but they rely on foster homes to do training, and that is what gets everyone into trouble. Especially with the fact there are a ton of horses on the market cheap, horses need to be safe and useful.

I have created a board under Sharing and Networking so we can list any Kigers in need of help or rescueing. Lets' start somewhere!
