Has anyone ever used an australian saddle? I am really considering buying one to try. They say its the best of both english and western style saddles. I am just looking for more information about them from people that aucally used them.

I had one once, when I started riding. It was good in that the "ears" helped keep you in the saddle on a spooky horse. But the stirup leathers pinched my legs a lot. They tend to be made for high withered horses too so make sure it fits your horse.

I've been looking at them, too, but seems the good ones are pretty pricey (I'm cheap...buy used...but even aussie used are plenty.)

I ride in an Aussie saddle made by Syd Hill & Sons, it's the real deal. The only thing I want to warn against is that if there is a cheap Aussie, expect that it is made in India and the stitching won't last and the leather is weird, not real quality leather. The old saying "You get what you pay for" really is true.
I do, however, highly recommend them to ride in. They are very comfortable and hold you in the saddle on bucks, bounces, spins and bolts. They're also wonderful for mountain climbing in that they hold you in nicely on those steeps hills, just like in the "Man from the Snowy River." Also, mine fits my Kigers well but it was made for my mom's broad backed mustang/morgan mare who has similar conformation to our Kigers. Anyway, they are great, and wonderful for long hours in the saddle.

When I first got my aussie saddle I didn't care for the stirrups. I was use too the western fenders on the western saddles. Now I love it!!!!!!!!! I like the high cantle on it and the ears do keep you in on a buck LOL. Plus my knees don't bug me near as bad as on the western type saddles. My Kiger seems really comfortable with it also. Its the only saddle I've had that won't slip on her, but then I also use the corrector pad by len brown under all my saddles. Maybe thats what helps her. Its one of those saddles you'll either like or won't like.

I just picked one up last weekend. Wasn't going to keep it but decided it felt too good to send back. Used, very beaten up and I probably paid too much, the leather is old and brittle. At least it feels like leather, though, and not that cheap stuff that's more plastic than cowhide. It fits Sandy okay, but not Jet at all. I figured for shorter rides or when I've got a third person along it'll be great. I really enjoyed my ride in it, but I do think I'll be investing in a pair of half chaps
