Can foals change color drasticly from their very first shed(foal coat) to their first spring shed? I am just woundering if a filly like mine could lighten up and not be so red next year? The latested photo of her in "its a dun deal" What color do you call this filly?

Hello Dara:
I am not sure about your filly but when we brought over our first four Kigers, the one filly was a dunalino color. She was born pure white (foal coat) and shed out to what appeared like a Dunalino. By the timr she was 3 she was a definate brilliant red dun with strong dun factor.
I am not sure what your filly will do as far as changing color but the only thing I can suggest is to wait and see. Perhaps you could post a few pictures of her now and a few next spring so we too can share in her changes.

You know what I started thinking about it and thought I should post pics of my boy Chips he is a bay and it might be more helpful to you. I guess you could say he became a lighter bay though in the winter he does get more black hair on the body and look darker and just shed out more red in the summer. Foal coat shed out Yearling shed out now 2 yrs old

I just love that Wickee, you can really tell from her foal photos she was going to be a LOOKER I love her FACE! Ok back to color. Chips looks alot like my filly although her black goes up her legs higher they are very close in color. I just noticed the other night who she had such light colored insides of her legs... but i guess most horses have some degree of that. Its great you have those photos to see the change in color.

It is nice to have the pictures to show as a reference of just how young horses can grow and change. I thought I would go ahead and add another pic' of Chips with his darker coat from winter before he completely shed out this summer.

Santana was the same way, he looked kind of dirty until his winter coat shed out. I love that first picture of Chips you can almost feel the sun. I think he's going to be big and finish out nicely.

Tiffany..i really think my little filly will look alot like your guy chips. She really looks real light in the arm pits like him. IS anyone getting big shocks in the newly shed out colors of the spring?

My real shock as far as color goes is alot more frosting in Wickees mane and her dun coloring appears lighter actually but we will have to see when she really sheds out completly. My biggest shock as she will be turning 4 yrs old is that she grew so much taller over the winter, I bet you a full hand taller.

Cord reminded me of Wickee's color as a baby....And now as he's shedding out and coming 2 he's definately the darker golden dun like Wickee has become (at least the shedded spots like around his face are)....What I'm curious about is do these guys normally keep their sooty patches as adults? Cord has always been a bit sooty colored over his withers....
