I've got a gal who's got a pretty dun mare that someone told her was probably Kiger...or half. To be honest that's the first thing that ran through my mind when I first saw her. You know how we mustang junkies can spot 'the look'. Anywho...the mare travels like a Paso, with a lot of shoulder movement and swinging those front feet way out to the sides. She's thinking about selling her due to financial problems (her dh has been laid off.) The mare has issues being tied and she thinks she broke her withers at one point. She's also not wearing a bit. Then again, the woman is a bit of a softie and thinks she can explain to her horses things in the English language...and that they understand her. So I really don't know just how much of what she says is legit and how much is just her being a softie. The horse is well mannered aside from the hangups, and I don't know if those could perhaps be worked through with a decent trainer. Is there any market for a maybe Kiger? I think she wants too much money considering the market right now. She's got her priced at $800.

Doesn't sound like too much to me. Any less and she could easily go for meat.

I don't know about that, Kim. Many of the small auction yards have stopped horse auctions because they're not selling. When they do, you can find registered stock for $100 and less If she didn't have other training issues I'd have a buyer for her based on her funky gait, but she's going to need someone with experience and a bit of compassion, I think, to get over some past troubles.

There are those buyers that are not breed specific and just want to ride pretty (I am assuming the mare is pretty). I would think it would be well worth this ladies time to work with this mare and fix some of her issues. There seems to be alot of issues , the mare may have broke it's withers, that is a big issue for saddle fit not just a pull back issue, a vet check and possible Xray would solve that question. The mare won' t wear a bit seems like someone needs to some dental work. Plus as you mentioned some time working on back to basics ground training, standing tied and such. To be honest there is a possibility the mare has the potential to be worth more then $800 but with the number of issues you mentioned above, I have to agree that she is worth less then $800 because of the amount of money and time to fix those issues the buyer would have to put into the horse.

Xana moves as you descibed...Paso like, so that could come from a Kiger heritage too.

It's unfortunate that the owner hasn't got the skill to fix the issues. She's a nice enough gal and has done a good job on ground manners with her horses, but it doesn't go farther than that. I went out to look at one of her mares and get a video for someone looking for a gaited mustang. She'd not taught the mare (or any of them) to lunge, so I was having a difficult time convincing her to step away from me and still keep a circle going. She was doing okay when the owner stopped us and stepped in to 'help', at which point she led the mare in a circle and explained to her that this is what I was asking her to do...to walk in a circle, like this, out here. It was all very amusing and the mare walked politely with her and then went back to not going in a circle. She claims the other mare has flash back issues with the tying. Someone tied her to a fence and when she pulled back the fence wasn't secure and the entire thing (chain link) came crashing down with the mare, who then proceeded to pull it halfway across the paddock with her. And yes, I suspect wolf teeth as well for the bit issue. Like you said, if she can come back from all of this, she could probably be worth something. Wish I had room enough to take her even for a week (no extra stalls and it's the rainy season) just to see what she's really like.
