This was when she was still over at the other ranch. All she'd ever had on her back was a bareback pad. The gal that worked at the ranch was ponying Firefly around the arena and she came up to me and I said, I can get on her back today. The gal said I was crazy but I said no, something tells me, I can get on her back today. I don't know why I know, I just know. So I carefully scooted a stool up close to Firefly, and climbed aboard. She turned her ears back towards me, still standing straight up, just turned in my direction. I talked to her and stroked her neck and we ponied around the arena at a trot. She was a little concerned but at no point made any effort to unseat me. We came back over to my husband and I slipped off Firefly's back and gave her tons of affection. She did fantastic and I was soaring so high for days after that. I don't know what told me she would let me, it was just something about her that told me she would. So Firefly's very first experience with someone on her back, was with only a bareback pad and she was wonderful I'll never forget that day.

Congragulations!!! I know how exciting that is. I hope you have many more great days like that with firefly... There's a lady where my horse's are at who has a 17 year old paso fino and they have the best bond Ive ever seen. The horse was a broodmare for a long time before this lady bought her, so she was just used and thats it, never really had a friend and the horse has history of foundering. She doesnt know a lot about horses, she's like alot of woman, she had her marriage and kids and now that she's in her late 40's and kids are grown is getting into horses, which has always been a dream of hers. When I met her, I helped her start her horse Breanna, on vitamins and a very low starch feed, which she only feeds a handful, just enough to put her supplements in for her to eat. I also gave her some websites to visit and research about foundering...every since she has started her on this and found out more information, she has not foundered, its been a year now. Everyone around her told her she was crazy for keeping this horse, because of the founder issue, and almost had her convinced a year ago to sell her until I talked her out of it. She's a very meek lady and listens to her neighbors too much...but like I said, they have a bond and I think my friend finally realized how special breanna is. Breanna doesnt trust anyone but her, she's very stand offish around other people but my friend can catch her and do whatever with her, she said she knows that Breanna takes care of her when she rides her, cause this lady is not experienced whatsoever, and breanna tolerates everything and watches out for her. She said she once almost fell off and it was like breanna felt it and stopped and kind of went the direction she was fallin to catch her.. so amazing.
Anyway, Im sorry to hijack your thread, just thought id share this story, from reading your threads about her, sounds like you've got a special bond with firefly like this.

That's okay nice story. It's nice to hear when a horse has been given a better lot than what they had.
