Thought some of the breeders here would be interested in something I learned today.... Desi came down with a fever of 104.5 last night, maybe picked up something viral when we went to the vets' office saturday for an eye injury. When they have a high temp like that, it kills all the little sperm guys and even the ones in transit. This means you have an infertile stallion for 105 days after the fact. We were at the end of breeding two mares with Des, so hopefully we got what we needed !

Michelle, Hope Desi is feeling better. Will his eye be OK? It could be possible that Desi's eye injury is the cause of his fever. Inflamation and or infection in the body can cause fever. I have never heard that a fever will affect the sperm for a total of 105 days. Antibiotics can affect the sperm's virility. Melissa

Hi Michelle, Thanks for the heads up. Hope Desi recovers quickly, any other symptoms? Glad you got the eye checked out, was it a scratch? Eye problems cause so much pain, hope he mends soon. Oso scratched his cornea on a blackberry bush when he was little and the vet said he'd never seen one heal so quickly.

Michelle, hope that Desi is better, and comfortable, eye pain is so bad to handle. Wow thanks for the heads up on the fever and sperm, makes sense to me... keep us posted on the eye.

It is also common for some stallions to have a slightly more elevated body temperature than mares and geldings. Melissa

Update on Desi....vet exam today and the eye is just about totally healed! Nothing ever came of the fever - probably because I stuffed him full of herbs and colloidal silver. Back into training tomarrow!

Michelle is colloidal in the same family as silvadine (I hope I spelled it right). My son's mother in law uses that allot for good health... they drink a mixture of it and the grandkids do not mind the nasty taste, the just get a swig each day is how they put it...

The Silvadine is supposed to be a "higher class" mixture of the colloidal silver. I use it quite a bit and have great luck with it. I especially use it alot in our wound care mixes.

But have you ever heard of people mixing it with water and drinking it... when my husband came home from the burn unit after a boiler blew and he got 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his face and hands, and ears they had him use silvadine for a week but it turned out to be a not so goof of a call an infection started and one doctor said it was because of the silvadine so... after that he was to use neosporen.. Nola

Yes, it can be used internally, but it is used for specific conditions. To take care of a burn, you would have to apply it topically to be of any use and along with an anti-inflammatory, anti-septic and an anti-bacterial that would cover a wide range (both positive and negative bacteria). On it's own, it cannot cover all evils! Also, it does not pass through the system internally and does build up over time in the kidneys - therefore, using it on a daily basis would scare me!
