The Pryor Mountains herd – Cloud from the PBS documentary and the McCullough (sp?) herd nearby are facing issues now also. Google “Cloud Foundation” for more info. The sad truth is that we have too many wild horses and as much as it pains me to think of putting them down, where is a viable alternative? With the majority of the budget going to maintain horses in holding we could be facing a shortage of money to support the ones still wild on the HMAs. What happens when there is no money for our wonderful horses or any other herd? We could see the day when we put Kigers into some private conservancy to protect them when BLM is no longer able to do so.

I know this is true, but why can't our government slash their own pay checks and add that money to taking care of this treasure, once they are gone they are gone. I am so sick of money hungry officials who want to tax us raise their pay, and not take care of these awesome animals... just my opinion...

I know what you mean nola...not only that bad management of the herds plays a big part as well. The drop in the horse market is surely bound to effect the Mustang adoptions. With so many horses where do they go ? in the harsh real word, if they were left in the wild, it would be survival of the fittest a great number of them I would imagine would slowly starve and die. Feed some predators and such, you know that circle of life. It is a catch 22 when humans get involved with wild animals. We can ensure their survival, with the wild horses even provide some with happy healthy homes. but then we have created a surplus we have no idea what to do with for the long term.

I have to say i agree with prizmbluekigers and fantasykigers- What other alternative is there and we cant save them all . Its REALLY sad thinking of all the wounderful horses being put down. What about the "unadoptables" why not euth. them and feed and care for the ones that are adoptable, sounds harsh I know.

see how I see this is we can save them all if the goverment would set aside money just for that purpose, but I know they won't, and it is sad to see these horse's die for no other reason then our goverment dies not have the money to feed them,,, I know allot of ranchers in the Utah, Nevada area who are so glad to hear this news, they feel this animal is nothing but a cur, it is so sad, these animals are more horse then any I have ever come across. i have owned QT, TB, and been around others and these horses are better hands down... I just hope and pray that something can be done, other then EU.... I know some will say i live in a fantasy land, and I guess i do...

I agree with Dara....why not euthanize the unadoptables and give some who are adoptable a chance.

It made me sick to see that they're going to euthanize now but really there is no other option. There are horses in my area who are being given away, 130 lb. bales of hay are projected to be at $20.00 each next year so who can afford to have horses? Not a lot of people own land anymore, most are boarding,... owning horses is becoming a luxury. The Mustangs will take a big hit because of our economy. I agree with Nola, why do our beauracrats (sp?) need such high pay checks? Greed. We live in a money hungry time and people are being less and less sympathetic to life in general.

It make sense if BLM is spending almost 2/3 of the yearly budget to support the long term holding.
I still don't know how they are going to justify removing horses unless they are harming the environment. BLM has tied their own tails in a knot now with some poor choices and I wish they would include more horse advocates in long term planning. I guess in some states or regions that does happen. Do we have anyone involved now in working with BLM who does not have a self serving agenda or a burning dislike for one faction of Kiger folks or another? No offense meant to anyone who had put in time working for the good of the wild Kigers, but we do argue amongst ourselves. I hope we will get a chance to submit input if the Kigers herds are in jeopardy!

Whining about mismanagement won't get you anywhere. In fact, I'd love to hear how others would have made it better. You get to start with just the horses on the range, 30,000 plus some, four years of drought and of course the current hay/fuel prices.
Now, in four years, when the horses on the range have doubled in size...and no one has adopted 30,000 excess horses...how will you have made it better?

See copy of letter posted under Euthanasia. I have written to everyone who might have a voice and probably some who can have no impact on the issues.
