So we were moving hay today, so I put him in his stall. The stall has no door, so when I need to keep him in I put a round pen panel in front of the door. So Tesoro was in his stall, the Belgian was in his stall, and I thought I was home free to leave the gates open. After all, I was just going to get 2 round bales right down the road... right?
So I was gone about 30 minutes. I drove up and found the gate wide open, just as I had left it. But the one thing out of place was a cute shiny dun colored butt off in the distance of the pasture, grazing happily. Yep. Tesoro had let himself out of his stall, waltzed right out the open gate to his pen, and was making himself quite at home wandering the pasture. The main pasture gate was open too, but he seemed to have no interest in leaving.
I parked at the gate, calmly walked right past him in to the barn, got a bucket of grain, and started shakin it. He totally ignored me. I could just hear him thinking "yea, there's grass out here". So I walked right up to him, patted him a few times, fed him a handful or two of grain, then turned my back and walked away. He slowly ambled behind me. I stopped at the barn entrance and gave him a handful more, then walked right in his pen, set the bucket down, and walked away. He walked right back in the pen and I shut the gate.
Yea... there was a wide open gate to the great outdoors, 2 mares in the pasture adjoining mine, dogs, and a neighbor mowing his lawn, and Tesoro just wanted to go out and graze.
As much of a heart attack as I had, he kinda made it seem like it was no big deal, lol. I love my horse.

OH lordy...yep' goes to prove all your hard work and persistance has paid off working with him and that moment was living proof. Tersoro loves and respects his mom the herd leader enough to follow her home. Oh and you might need a better locking sytem on that panel, had you not heard Kigers are exellant escape artist, they are just so smart ;D ..LOL

you got that right Tiffany, I was also told about a Kiger who kept butting up and pushing against the panels of a round pen till it moved the darn thing, and was able to get out....

Chinny pulled that trick, or tried to when he was at a three day colt starting clinic. He would put his side to the panel and lift and push it. However, he pushed the panels into a very hot electric wire, so he quit! But I have seen him put his butt on different places in a wood fence to test its strength. Smoke was an expert at opening gates and let himself out the first night he was at a trainers. Later he also escaped his stall at the barn until we increased the strength of the latches and put carabiners on them to lock them. I guess he could see why he couldn't go eat all the great spring grass that was just waiting outside the barn.

ah, yes....carabiners.....Rev can open them. Don't know how - it takes me two hands and sometimes I wish I had three to get those suckers open! One of the two year old stud colts can do it to - I think it may possibly be Rico, Revs' full brother!
Lynns' little filly out of the mare from the adoption is quite the want-to-be houdini. We often catch her working on gate latches, especially if she is locked out of somewhere she wants to be!

Kevin always makes me shut the main gate. I say, "they have a round pen, how are they going to get out?" He says, " better safe than sorry!" I have to agree with that!!! So glad it turned out O.K.

a friend here who is a trainer told me that after I latch it with the chain put the chain inside the circle like this (/) Jim"s mustang is real good at undoing the chain, so we also do a lock on her stall. Horses are not dumb animals as some people think.
