Well a new Flashy is emerging, from the work Jim has been doing with her on issues she has. She tends to spook so easy, Jim has been working on that by spooking her, letting her pull away to as far as she needs to feel safe, he stops, lets her calm down, talks soothingly to her as he brings her in close again. And he repeats this. Now she steps back on step, head up alert, but no more fear in her eyes, she stops and thinks and then on her own moves forward towards to him or me. She follows Jim to her stall, through the barn he is not holding the lead rope, and when they approach her stall, she stops at the gate, and waits till Jim commands her to move forward, she does not crowd, and goes into her stall. today she walked around with a tarp on herself, walked over it first, she was a bit nervous when Jim put it on her, and pulled some through her halter so it would stay put, she did not bolt, walked around with it, followed Jim back to her stall with it on her. She is blossoming... Here is some what of what she went through before we bought her. A person who knew nothing about horse's he called himself (Cowboy) would ride her at a run for 3 miles to the store, and back, never walked her. Her owner believed that if you do not get what you want you use spurs on them till they do give, and this happened to her allot, so when she came up for sale I did not hesitate, I bought her for 1500.00. The first time i rode her she bolted on me, I got her under control, she was so nervous she knew she did wrong, but I stayed calm, work on her a bit, did not loose my temper. She would turn away from us, and not want to be caught, the old owner told us to beat her to a parade rest with the end of that lead rope. Nope, We worked with her and it is getting better. She has an issue against men. but because Jim has been so patient with her, she trusts him ,and you can see it in her reaction to his commands, Most people out there are amazed. We also do not yell at her, horse's have awesome hearing, so we just try to change out tone, when she or any of our other horses do something wrong. Neither Jim and I will use spurs, I own a pair, but I do not use them, I have had them for almost 20 years. Just wanted to let you all know she is doing wonderful, and an different horse is emerging, even from the one I bought 2 years ago.

False pregnacy is difficult, but I suspect that it was harder on you than on Flashy. It is hearbreaking to be sure. While it is possible that the vet exam caused her to loose the foal, it is not uncommon for horses to abort for numerous reasons. Horses have very high rates of unsuccessful pregnancies. It likely has caused the species to survive. If all conditions aren't right, no foal with less risk to the mare and fewer malformed or foals that are unable to survive. Regardless, that vet should have not continued if the mare was that stressed without sedation.
I am so glad that Flashy will have a new job and people to care about her. She is lucky to have had all of that special attention during that time. There are too many horses that don't have that good fortune.

I am so glad that Flashy is doing so well with her new job as a trail horse and she is learning to bond with people as well. Flashy is lucky to have such loving owners who care about her well being. We are going thru' much the same experiences with my daughter's new horse Lana. After in the begining thinking she was a tad on the spooky side and just thinking she needed some desensitizing work, we have come to discover she is not afraid of objects so much as people. While you can handle her and ride her because her training was so ingrained or smacked into her, she is wound so tight you could bounce a quarter off any part of her body. Try and attempt the simple task of petting her and she jumps sideways. We did find out later, her very first owner did not consider horses pets so there was no reason to create a bond to your horse. The person we bought her from just never had the time to fix her issues, they were only interested in catching her to ride her and that was getting more difficult, in the end they were chasing her with motorcycle until she was to tired to run any longer. I can tell you the ground work with this horse is going to be a challenge. In the same regard Lana is trying to process why we just want to touch her and walk away and what is with all the sweet talk...LOL.

seems once they realize that they are loved and nothing to be afraid of then they tend to change for the good, she is no dummy (Flash) Rob walked up to her pen while we were massaging her, she heard his voice and shot side ways till we cooed and calmed her down, for some reason she does not like him. so she let me finish her massage, and it was so cute, she lowered her head closed her eyes, and I really believe she was smiling. Yes i was disappointed no baby, but watching others with foals and how much they are tied to being so close to the foal and hard to do things, and how stressed out both get when not together, I am glad now relieved is a better word. Stormy will give me the foal I want when I breed her to Riddle, but till then I will just enjoy the quiet times i have with my mares...

it was so hot and humid today. flies were all over the horses; they were glad when we sprayed them down with fly spray, wiped their faces, and around their eyes. Can't keep the flies off 100% but 90 percent is better then nothing. Cleaned all the stalls yesterday, and today stormy and Flashy's look like I did not even touch theirs. Well they will have to live with it cause i won't clean it till Monday, we and them get a rest on Sunday, we keep the sabbath. I put the halter on her she followed my out of her pen, over to where Jim was and I was not holding her rope, I draped it over her neck. it was so cool. Stormy also will do this for us. I just can not express how I feel about my horse's. Especially my girls... please don't get me wrong, I love our Gelding and Riddle but these 3 ladies have my heart and soul.

She won't be bred, but she won't be a hay burner either, that will have to wait for maybe another 30 years, then she can be put out to pasture and be a hay burner. She is responding well to consistent work, training, and the love and patient we are showing her, needless to say there are times when she reverts back, but not as much as before, and now she even stands by her feeder with her yummies when Jim walks up, and I am filling her water barrel before she would dart away cause of Jim being close. that in it's self is awesome.

I hope we are. tonight I felt we made a large step in the right direction. she normally would bolt away from us in the dark, put her butt to us, and I felt if I pushed her she would kick me. But tonight it was dark when I went back out, and visited all my horse's and loved on them, and I went into her pen she did not move away, she let me stroke her neck, face, and body.no butt turning on me,no feeling she was going to kick me, I was so touched, I wanted to cry, and I rewarded her with a hand full of hay. I have one question for you all and want opinions: ;D Before we bred her I was riding her, not very comfortable on her back cause of her problems, but we were out with about 7 other riders, and she had to pee, so we stopped I stood up in the saddle, leaned forward to get pressure off her back, needless to say I was given hell from the other riders except my husband who does the same thing. I just wanted to make her comfortable, what do you all think?

You did the right thing nola, you should always lift yourself off the saddle and lean forward when your mare stopps to pee taking the pressure off her. Not to mention the awkward way some mares often choose to spread em' and stand on their tip toes they don't need to support your weight back there as well.

I just do not get why some people do not care for the comfort of their horse's.

Went out and feed and was getting ready to leave and walked up to flashy her butt was towards the gate she was munching away, I touched her and spoke she started to step away, stopped put her head down and munched away, So I continued to rub her butt cheek and she stayed still. then she pooted and I told her thank you and rubbed a bit longer then left. Than was another big step in the right direction.... We are making progress..

tonight we turned Flashy, Stormy, and shooter out together in the paddock, and what a joy it was to watch these three run buck, jump straight up in the air then kick out. at this rate both Flashy and Stormy will slim down, and build awesome muscles, and shooter will build muscles. We turned Nova out by her self, she is an Alpha Mare, and i do not like her around my stormy when she is in one of her moods... she enjoyed being out there by herself, running and rolling. It was so cool to watch all of them get going...

well Flashy is slimming down, she is also changing her attitude for the best... Stormy also is slimming down, and they both love to be turned out together, I laughed last night, cause Stormy kicked out at Flashy then booked before Flashy could kick at her which Flashy did, These two keep me on my toes that is for sure....
