My daughter has a friend who just purchased a 1/2 Kiger gelding. When she asked about the geldings breeding the new owner said he was the product of a domestic mare on a picket line visiting the Steens area on a campout (to view the wild horse herds) when a wild Kiger stallion made a visit in the night. The owners of the mare were awoken by the commotion and witnessed the event. I am not saying it is impossible but I question just how wild are the Kiger Mustang herds. It just seems unlikely they would venture that close to humans. Then again maybe hormones beat all and a mare in heat is just to tempting. What a way to get a free breed in. Have any of you heard of such an incident in your years with Kigers, for this was a first for me.

Tiffany,
I have heard of the horses coming in and very close to camp sites before. I'm pretty amazed at the breeding, though wouldn't completely doubt it. I'm sure Dianne or Lisa can let us know a little better.

wow I thought as I was reading this no way, but then i re read it and thought very well could be, just never know.. what I thought also is wouldn't he try to get her away from the herd, even being tied up, would not all the other horses make such a racket that it would wake up the whole camp, I am just wondering...

I would guess it would be very possible. Many wild animals forget thier natural cautiousness when it comes to breeding. A good example is deer during the rut, that is when all those big bucks get shot. They will look right at my husband and go back to sniffing on the doe.
We have a wild rabbits that come right into the middle of the horse pens chasing eachother with no regard to people or animals including our dogs. We have also had wild turkeys' come right onto the back porch when we have quail out or even funnier, come up into the back yard and try to breed my husbands decoys or shooting targets...

The Stallion will try to come down to camp. But it is the bachelor stallions that would come down to breed. We run across that in all the herds that we ride. We have horses that try to come into camp at night. Kevin never gets any sleep as he is listening for any noises at all. Kevin had a bachelor stallion that tried to smell his mare as he was taking pictues on the ground.

That does make more sense that a young stallion, would be willing to take the risk. He just don't know any better....LOL ;D We all know with a willing mare it can happen in a flash.

Michelle, excellent point on the deer in rut and the jack rabbits! They're both crazy when it is breeding season, and you could go round them up with a butterfly net!
