tonight!! She was due on the 8th, but being a maiden mare, they usually hold out longer. She has been miserable and crampy for a few days now, but this evening she came in from being out all day with larger udders than she went out with - plus they are hot and hard - ready to feed that new foal!
The foal was really kicking while I was cleaning her up..off to get a few hours sleep while Lynn holds watch...

We have a beautiful dun filly from Hija and Desi! Hija is a wonderful momma and you can tell she is just thrilled to have her own foal. It has amazed me this year having two maiden Kiger mares and how wonderful they are with thier new bundle of joy. I have had lots of other first timers of other breeds, and most are pretty difficult and the whole thing is really stressful. We are on the downside of foaling season now - three more to go!

We have named Hijas' filly Brisa Fresca (Cool Breeze). She is just a doll of a filly, climb right in your lap and lick all over your face...super active, gets outside and runs and runs and runs! Desi just may earn his manhood after all!

What a pretty name for such a sweet face.
I'm very impressed with Desi already, and I haven't even got to see his fillies move yet!

Congrats on your foals! I love jumping around all of the message boards and looking at all of the cute foals. A Kiger mare by the name of April foaled on the horse.com forums. She was bred to an Appy stud. I'd have to say the most waited on foal of the forum! lol April's owner is a sweet heart.
I wanted to share a story with you all just so you continue to watch those maiden mares carefully no matter if they are a Kiger or not. The woman that is currently leasing out my mare adopted two Kiger mares from the last adoption. The older mare was not in foal and the 3 year old was. The 3 year olds name is Sarah. My mare's name is Victoria(she is not a Kiger. She is a registered Barb). Here is the story that the lessee sent me:
"The foal had slipped under the fence and Sarah and baby were separated. Sarah could have cared less. So I carried baby into the pasture and Sarah wouldn't let her nurse or do anything with her. So I decided to put them together in the paddock. Victoria went into the paddock, pinned her ears at Sarah and bit her in the butt and herded her to the corner where the baby was. Next Victoria stuck her head under baby and moved her to nurse on Sarah. Once the foal was nursing and Sarah was doing what she was supposed to do Victoria moved out of the paddock so that I could close the gate. Victoria really considers theses mares her herd and she is the boss! She really helped this first time mom. She was amazing!"
Again, Congratulations on your new foals and your good fortune with your maiden mares!

What a cool story to share! Do you know what numbers the mares were that she adopted? Would you ask her to come join us on the board and share photos and progress with the mares? There is a thread above just for that and I, for one, would love to hear about them.
