While I know it is not a new concept, I learned something new in connection to frozen semen while watching a horse talk show on RFDTV last night. They had a QH breeder on there and he was discussing frozen semen. He mentioned instead of buying life insurance on your awesome stallion invest in frozen semen and the ability to store it. It will last forever and that is the reason you were insuring your stallion anyway to insure you will continue to make money on his prodigy. So instead of getting paid a final lump some invest on future foals with frozen semen. Another idea he also uses is he had a good heading horse that was a stallion but he knew the horse would be great if they gelded him, so he could focus better. They collected off the horse froze his semen then had him gelded. He went on to become a champion and he had frozen semen for anyone interested in breeding to a champion gelding. I thought this was a novel idea. So many studs stuck in stalls could be collected off of stored and gelded and left to live much more normal lives. Of course he never mentioned cost, I have no idea. Not all stallions are as sweet and wonderful as our Kiger stallions we know. It just seems like a pretty neat option for those ruff stallions, folks say have such awesome bloodlines it qualifies them as studs. I say collect off them freeze their semen then geld em', the best of both worlds.
