I Have yet to learn just which horse in my herd has figured out how to unplug the electric fence Some horse has stuck there nose past the electric tape thru' a square in the field fence to grab the orange extention cord that is plugged into the elctric fence powerbox on the outside of the fence and unplugging it. I know it is a horse because the orange cord is pulled on the inside of the pasture fence. I can rule out the older mares they hardly care enough to do much of anything but eat and nap on any given day. So that leaves the younger horses. I think I can rule out Princess the pintaloosa she is to reactive to stick her nose near electric tape. Maybe the mini but he rarely does anything with out food incentive, besides with his thick coat the electric fence has never been a issue with him. That leaves my two most mischievous culprits Chips the 2 yr old gelding he loves to check out everything with his mouth, or Wickee who is easily bored and brave enough to go past the electric tape. When ever I see a horse lean on the electric tape I go check the box first and sure enough it is unplugged. Boy I wish I knew who it was.

Hmmm, can you string a hot wire across the opening?

No I can not put hot wire across opening, but I might have to put in a post to hang the cord on out side the fence so it is up and away, rather then hanging against the outside of the fence. Although I would like to catch the culprit and see just who is so clever. I would just have to get lucky to catch them in the act though.

Have you been able to catch the culprit, and have you also been able to change what ever you need to,to stop them from doing this. Is just the top wire on your fence hot or what. Can you make the whole fence hot, or is that not wise. I have never worked with it, but have been bit by it and I did not like it. and said I would not use the stuff, but that was a child in the 8th grade talking. I was walking home from the store with my little brother we were Christmas shopping, and decided to take a short cut home with our gifts, and did not see the wire, and tripped over it and fell on it and got bit, I cried .And finally we both were able to get off of it, but we never could figure out why it was there since it was just on one side of a field and only one strand close to the ground. And no one was using that field. That was my first and last experience with an electric fence. But I am older now (allot) and am looking into it cause I have one horse who loves to push against his gate, and fence in the paddock where he is stabled. and the owner has said it would be fine.,

This might help you get a better picture, a picture of the fence. Looking at the fence again I think it is more likely they are reaching under the bottem strand of electric and yanking on the orange cord. I think Spring time and back to daily training will keep them from being bored as well and getting into mischief. No one has unplugged it sense the return of nice weather and back to ground work sessions.

Hubb says , staples and duct tape will fix you right up !!! LOL
Pedro was thrown out of a field for breaking the hot wire. When he was in pasture... he always had his head outside of the fence ,getting into things..
Good luck ...

Horses have turned me into a pro' fence mender. I have yet to find the perfect fence for one and all. My husband thought a simple wood fence with feild wire would hold them at bay but the Clydesdale proved him wrong when she bent it over to get her some weeds on the other side, never no mind that the posts were cemented in. Thank goodness the Clyde thinks strips of white tape are evil and must be avoided at all costs. A little late for that one section of fence. At least she never puts the electric fence to the test when the clever rascal unplugged it. I have fixed it and now no one will be unplugging it as it is out of reach.

am glad to hear that you are a pro fence mender, I would loved to have known which horse is so clever, and not scared of the mean tape that sends an awful sting into them. I hope that it will stop now and you will find out who.

Tiffany:
Try taking one of those little kitchen sponges and soak it in veggie oil and red food coloring. Place the sponge right beside the plug and who ever has a red chin/nose/face is your culprit. Be aware, the red die may not wash off completely so if you have plans of taking them into public (shows, trail rides with others etc...) you might want to rethink the red food color thing. Just a suggestion.

Oh that is to funny ;D but very clever Kelly. I have the plug-in out of the way now and it is no longer an issue but should I ever have an issue where someone is messing with something they should not be, I will surely remember your advice Should anyone remark on the lovely stain on my horse, I will let them know that's a sign of a smart horse, but also one who was busted...LOL.
