Stormy is a red line back dun, and Riddle is a dark line back dun. now what are my chances of getting a red dun out of these two. I do not understand genetics.

Stormy's mane and tail are black, right? Even if she has a reddish tint to her coat, the black mane and tail make her a dun... not a red dun. Her mane and tail would have to be red for that, plus her legs wouldn't be black, they'd be dark red. Chances are pretty good you'd get a regular dun, just somewhere between their two colors. Not guaranteed, lol, you might get black, bay, or the "dreaded" grey, lol. Here's a great site on the dun color: www.mustangs4us.com/Horse%20Colors/dun.htm

Actually she wouldn't get grey from those two as neither of them are grey. At least one parent must be grey for the offspring to be grey. I agree that both Stormy and Riddle are dun and not red dun. Unless you have them tested to see if both carry a red gene, then it's pretty much anyones guess. The parents would each need to pass down a red gene for you to get a red dun baby. This is kind of a neat site www.horsetesting.com/CCalculator1.asp

I have a red dun mare and I once had a person tell me that she was just a dun because there was black in her tail. I argued about it but this person wouldn't hear me at all... He/She was an inspector for the KMA so my mare was registered as just "dun." That's fine with me, I know what color she is anyway. It just amazes me... Red dun can have black in the tail same as a chestnut can have black in the tail but the main portion of color is red and the red legs give you a clue as well. Just a tidbit of info... ;D Nola, like they suggested, get your color testing done at UC Davis and then you'll know. Red dorsal doesn't mean much, Belle has one and she has only had two grullas and two duns (although I thought the last one was a red dun until she shed out her yearling summer).

Caliente is out of Calista who has the sooty gene (there it is again). So if she didn't have the dun gene she would be a dark chestnut or liver chestnut as it is sometimes called. Both Cali and Calista have very dark parts to their manes and tails and their legs are darker, but brown not black. Calista's coat color can vary at times to look zebra dun, but usually it is slightly redder.

will do the testing. Stormy has a red line down her back she has light colors through out her mane and tail. But I was wanting some information and you all came through for me thank you so much. When I breed her as long as she and baby are fine that is really all I care about, but that won't be till next year.

A regular dun can have a red line as well. Not sure why that happens. If she has black legs she is zebra (bay) dun not red dun.

it can be so confusing, thank you, yes she has black legs it cracks me up though that cause of that the bay could be in there, when our BLM Mustang is a bay and they do not look alike in color at all. I am learning allot thank you all so much.

She may be registered that way, but genetically she is not a red dun. She is what would be called a zebra dun ( a dun dilute of bay ). If she were red dun she would have a red mane and tail ( even if it had some black hairs intermixed like Cali ) as well as red points on her legs. Perhaps you could interpret the word red on her papers to describe her actual dorsal stripe? The red dorsal stripe could possibly indicate she has one copy of the red gene, as red is recessive. Maybe? Heck, wouldn't be the first set of inaccurate registration papers in the world either!

well she is shedding out her winter coat and she is getting lighter in color with a red tint, and I measured her tonight and she is 14. hands tall, woo hoo she's grown. Oh well to the red line back dun thing, she is mine and I am so happy with how she looks. and that is all that matters to me.

My thought for years now about the red line down the back is that it might be the horse's color without the dun dilution. Such as if a horse has a dark line, maybe that horse would be a black bay and if it has a red line, a blood bay? Just my crazy thoughts. ;D

we bred her and it looks like it has taken she acts like Riddle is a monster, and wants nothing to do with her, we have not had her vet checked and probaby won't for a bit longer, but we did do the teasing with Riddle and she laid her ears back, showed her teeth and let him know you aint wanted anymore...
