Jim and I are not advertising yet that we have horse's for sale, we feel we need to make sure the ones we want to sell are an all around safe horse. As we were working with our grade Mustang Gypsy a lady drove up, asked if we would sell her. when we explained yes after she is trained and safe. Now she is just 2. and we will not rush her, and have a horse that might blow up down the road, she was excited. but I felt she wasn't right for the horse. Now I follow my instincts, I feel it is a gift. and I was right. when we asked around about her, turns out she has had issues with abusing horse's.. Why do people try to pass themselves off as good humans..upsets me, and makes me a bit leery. I am thinking that before I sell a horse, I just might do a back ground check. Do you all think it is a bit intrusive. my kids do...

Lots of people ask for references when selling a horse and some also require a first right of refusal if the person should decide to sell down the road.

Don't feel bad and go with your instincts. I try to put the prospective owner and horse in different situations at different times so I can see the interaction. Not all horses and humans will click. I also tend to put people off to see if they are really interested and make sure they are not jumping the gun and getting in over their heads. My husband gets irritated with me but someone has got to REALLY REALLY want one of my horses before I decide to sell to them.
Yes, references too!

After my last selling experience I will be doing a background check and references and at least three visits. I am still upset about what happens to my little girl and I won't let that happen again even if it means never selling a horse

Nola, you are doing the right thing by not selling your mare until she is going nicely under saddle. Many folks do not know how to raise a foal properly or pick out a suitable trainer when it is time to start under saddle. Most horses are ruined at the starting process.
Horses need to be safe, solid citizens and going well under saddle to do your best to ensure they are set up for the best chance in life.

I agree, you did the right thing. I've gotten lucky in that I've pretty much only sold to friends or people I know. Usually there's a half lease situation going on before hand, so I know the two make a good pair. Of course, I don't sell many horses so I can afford to work like that.
That being said, I'm very glad Kevin and Lisa took a chance on me when they sold Keno. Heck, I don't think I would have sold Keno to me, had I been in their shoes. Some total stranger in Korea wants to buy a horse sight unseen and then asks you to hang on to it for a few months until they can ship it to Hawaii. I wouldn't have blamed them for a second if they had said no.

Thank you, I was raised to follow my gut it really won't lead you wrong. and I am going to keep being intrusive as my kids put it. I love my animals and want them to have the best home possible. if I never sell a horse so be it. besides I bet we all will be using them allot when gas get to high to drive, if that happens we will be set. just a bit of scary humor huh?

I was thinking the same thing a couple days ago regarding gas prices.

Growing up I heard things like one day gas is going to be so high only the rich will be able to drive we will return back to horse and buggy.and that our constitution is going to hang by a thread, and guess what it all is coming true, my ancestors knew, scary, I placed these sayings way back in my mind, but they have popped out big time lately.. so I guess I need to train a couple of our horses to the harness, and buy a wagon and learn to drive.. ;D

boy would that put us back a good bit. Of course the corporations wouldn't do well in something like that as we would all be back to buying locally. Don't think it would come to that, but who knows.
