The mare lay in a thicket
Whinnying at the pain
Breathing hard, stallion on guard
Gasping in the rain
Her rain soaked side is heaving
Her hooves scratch at the ground
Her muscles taught her nerves distraught
Her tummy large and round
The herd stands at a distance
Some foals already play
They kick and run and nip in fun
And wonder at the day
The mares knicker softly
To the one stretched on the ground
Returning the call she gives her all
A grunt is her only sound
Her flank quivers in waves
Her chest is heaving high
A whispering moan a sighing groan
She lifts her face to the sky
Rain drops jewel the branches
Clouds eddy and roil
A mighty push within the bush
A life slides to the soil
Exhausted from the ordeal
The mare licks clean the foal
Body wrung she busies her tongue
From tiny tail to poll
The darkness of his coat
Shimmers in the rain
Lifting his head from the makeshift bed
His knickers soft and plain
The mare regains her feet
And gives the foal a nudge
Flailing his feet he lifts to his seat
From there he doesn’t budge
With wonder in his eyes
He looks upon his sire
Standing bold within the cold
His coat shines like a pyre
The stallion dips his nose
He nudges the little colt
With legs spread wide he stands astride
And tries his best to bolt
His legs do not seem his
Do not follow his command
Legs inept are not adept
He stumbles to the sand
He looks upon his dam
And then upon his sire
A flurry of feet then onto the teat
He fills his hungered desire
His coat the color of gunmetal blue
His mane is dark as oil
It stands at a prick, short but quite thick
His tail a gunmetal coil
With a snort and a stomp he steps back
Arches his little colt neck
A jump and a kick and a sassy tail flick
He lands on the ground in a wreck
He shakes his head and snorts
Positions himself to rise
He lifts to his feet takes off with a bleat
To his mothers prideful surprise
The stallion returns to the herd
And climbs upon his hill
While the foal below kicks unseen foe
His mother eats her fill
Whinnying at the pain
Breathing hard, stallion on guard
Gasping in the rain
