Yesterday Smoke was put down to a fractued right fore leg. Before any one jumps on me for my decision (like the secretary Burns BLM) we had xrays done immediately after Storm started to limp showed a fracture from fetlock to hoof with a butterfly at the bottom. I took him to Galbreath Equine Center 285 miles from the trainers. He was not cooperative with loading and unloading. Alot of stress on the leg. Xrays taken showed that it had shattered but not gone through the skin. They could pin it. He would be in a special cast for at least 6 wks. Good possiblity he would need another surgery to repin cast. The prognosis pasture pet with severe arthritic pain for the rest of his life. Cost $6000 dollars with $35/aday for board until pretty much healed. The staff of the BLM wild horse department were very kind and understanding. I wish to thank them for their kindness. I tried to add his picture but was unable to.

So sorry to hear about your baby, I know that was a tough decision, but if he was going to be in a lot of pain for the rest of his life, you had to consider 'quality of life'. Again, very sorry to hear about your loss

So sorry for your loss ;-( we had a horse with a broken leg and after a $1500 surgery he rebroke it when he came out of anastesia and we didn't know it because he was in a cast. He had to be put down because the infection was too bad. It is never an easy decision.

Oh Courtney, so sorry to hear this. I still remember your beaming smile when you were the winning bid on him. Noting but support here. You absolutely did the best thing for Smoke and you. Take care. Karen

So sorry Courtney. I know the sick feeling you have when you have to decide what is best for them. Lost my 2007 filly to a freak accident in 2009 that broke her hip/pelvis. there was a very very slim possibility we might have been able to get it to heal but she would always have trouble with a shorter hind leg and barely be pasture sound and most likely have pain issues. You put so much of yourself in gentling and earning their trust when you lose one it's like losing a piece of yourself.
