In order to keep Frodo Away from all the young children in the family he has been ordered to solitary confinement (a rule i have to follow to keep him). So with that in mind I am thinking of turning half of his corral into a pasture. I am wondering what would be the best grass to plant and when. I can do multiple plantings at different times of the year if necessary. Right now it is just hard packed dirt. My main reason for wanting this is so when I go out of town I dont have to worry about someone not feeding him.
From what I have read and heard they say bermuda and rye but what about sudan, timothy or orchard. What is the best for a growing boy and still ok for cows if they get to it.
Thanks

You may have already found this, but it may help you some. www.horsepasture.com/info/selecting-a-grass.htmlWe have coastal and Argentinean Bermuda grass here, but we are in the Florida panhandle. We replanted a pasture about 4 yrs ago after centipede grass overtook it. It was a pretty easy process. We burned it, then plowed it under a few times until we figured the centipede was dead. We disked it to smooth it out. After that we sprigged it heavily with FRESH Bermuda cuttings from another pasture. Then we disked it in lightly to get some soil over it. We fertilized it pretty heavily and thankfully it was a wet year.

Call you local Ag Extention office and they will come out and let you know what you need to do and when. Probably take a soil sample too.

The only type I could find around me was Sahara Bermuda. I will oversees with ryegrass in the fall so there is winter feed for him. He will still get his grain and a little hay but hopefully not as much
