I set up a small roundpen in one of the stallion pens last week so we can begin our halter-startingpaloosa! I've got two coming two year old fillies, a coming three year old filly and the two boys from last year. I am also taking advantage of the smaller pen to work with the eleven year old mare, Raz, from the Kiger adoption too.
The first one is a coming two year old filly, Kahlua; she is out of the mare from the 2007 roundup, Nesa and by Charro. She has never had any ropes near her but can get her feet trimmed and be dewormed with no issues. I just adore this filly...
This is the other two year old, MisTika. She is out of our QH mare, Morgan and by Charro. The QH crosses are quite different...we've had three different QH mares and all the fillies are the same. Pretty stand offish from day one, can be over reactive and don't offer to participate in things right off the bat. Once they have some training, they are awesome horses - just different than the purebred Kigers. One thing that has amazed me is that every single one of them becomes pushy the minute you show them affection. You'll see this filly start leaning toward me while I put the halter on and even begin taking steps in my direction even though I am right next to her - she is trying to move my feet. That is the big reason I start pushing her out onto a circle the first session. Another reason is because you will see that she naturally is not motivated to be with me like Kahlua was. Tika is more interested in everything else but me. Working motivates this type of horse. Tika has had the neck rope on for two sessions when she was about 8 months old. That is why as soon as I get the halter around her neck, she begins to give and settle down.
